They shared a room. Raivis and Matthew shared a freaking dorm room, and Matthew had forgotten? Or just not noticed before? That was an internet worthy fail, right there.

Matthew was lying on his bed, texting as fast as he could. Maple, he hated not being homeschooled and able to text or go online whenever he wanted… Regardless of whether he should or not.

So yah, I forgot the person I was rooming with who im now doing a report with. orz

Matthew frowned as he turned off his phone. Yeah, he probably would need the luck. In his defense, he probably hadn’t noticed since he hadn’t really been trying to make friends, combined with the fact that he’d been preoccupied with a book, schoolwork, or the Internet. He had noticed the slightly hyper, energetic boy at least. Of course, HE was hard to miss…

Sighing, Matthew rolled off his bed. He had to get the stuff out, even if he would much rather take a nap… He had been training with his powers, and now he was pretty much exhausted. He hoped he wouldn’t randomly fall asleep while trying to talk to Raivis. That would not be good, to put it mildly.

Once again, he was a bit upset he wasn’t still homeschooling. He could’ve been napping right now, or even had been sleeping instead of doing class. Well, sleeping instead of doing homework. The one time he had fallen asleep in a homeschooling class had ended even worse then the few times he’d fallen asleep here in class.

He started laying books out on the floor, some about mammals in general, others specifically about bears. He had swung by the library earlier to pick up the books and glanced in the romance section as well… His first and only impression had been of the incredible amount of PINK in the section. As if that wasn’t terrifying enough, the library had been rather crowded… Raivis could turn invisible, or get camouflaged or whatever, but Matthew didn’t have a power like that… He would just ask Raivis what some of his favorites were and then duck discreetly into the library some other time to check them out.

He blinked, realizing he had been zoning out and almost falling asleep standing up. He looked over his arrangement of books again before remembering that he had said he would show Raivis some of his stories. Frowning, he grabbed his laptop and flipped it open, quickly scanning through some of the typed up works. He kept a few decent ones up, and laid the laptop on his bed. It would’ve probably been easier to read typed out, but as it was was probably fine… And maybe Raivis would just forget as well. Which would be perfectly all right with Matthew. It would give him more time to maybe try his hand at a little romancy piece...

Raivis was having a horrible day so far. These two boys kept stopping him in the hallway and messed with him, pushing him around. The first time when Raivis had disappeared from sight, the boys looked confused and walked away. But the second time, they seemed to have learned. They looked carefully for the faint outline of Raivis against the wallpaper and continued to push him around.

To put it lightly, Raivis was very glad that the school day was over. He walked quickly toward his dorm, glancing around nervously to make sure those two boys weren’t following him. Thankfully, they weren’t, and even if they were Raivis was camouflaged at the moment. Still, he was nervous about the whole thing.

He sighed in relief when he reached the dorm, running inside as fast as he could. He slammed the door behind him and leaned against it, closing his eyes for a moment. He just needed to calm down, get his act together, then he could work on some homework and- Oh, right, he had that report to do with Matthew.

Raivis sighed again and looked at his hand. It was only slightly transparent, enough to freak someone out but not enough to disappear from sight. It was better than nothing. He dropped his bag on the floor and knelt down to search through it. He took out a few pencils, a notebook, and a few books about many species of bears he managed to find in the library. With those items, he walked into the bedroom.

As he had expected, Matthew was already in there. What he didn’t expect was how many books he had managed to get. Some were not specifically about bears, which made Raivis a bit nervous he had heard wrong before. But after seeing a few of the other books he realized that he had been right.

“H-hi,” he said lamely. “I-I-I brought some other books to use, i-if we need them.” He placed the books on a nearby table, but kept his notebook and pencils in his hand. He gripped the pencils tightly and hugged the notebook to his chest. God, he really wished he knew how to control his power. It felt so weird talking to Matthew when he basically half invisible.

Matthew looked up from his blue notebook when he heard the slam of a door. He dismissed it and went back to frantically writing. Ideas could not be wasted, not for distraction or school or anything. If he stopped, the idea could just fly away again! … He doubted his teachers thought the same when they found him writing in class about a dragon fight rather than the subject being taught, but they would just have to deal with it. If he were going to become a writer someday, he’d need all the ideas he could get…

“H-hi, I-I-I brought some other books to use, i-if we need them.”

“Mm,” He acknowledged Raivis coming in, but didn’t look up again. He had to finish this scene, or else it would be gone from his head forever…

He finished writing with a flourish, slammed to notebook shut, looked up at Raivis and jumped in surprise. He realized what had happened and calmed down quickly enough, but his heart was still racing from shock.

“G-geez,” He gasped. “That’s a little freaky… Er, I don’t think we need anymore books…”
He chuckled sheepishly, and gestured to an open spot among the bookish chaos on the floor. He sat there silent for a moment, then remembered something about Raivis’ power.

“Wait… Don’t you turn invisible – Or, well, semitransparent when you’re scared or something?” He asked, his eyebrows knitting together worriedly. Sure, it was blunt, but if something had happened to Raivis, Matthew was pretty sure he wasn’t going to just open up and talk about it… And if he didn’t open up and talk about it, nothing would happen to help the situation. So it was perfectly fine to be blunt.

“Did something happen? I mean – What happened?” it was pretty obvious something had happened – people don’t just start slamming doors and becoming semi-transparent for nothing.

Ravis shook his head a few times. He looked down at the floor and shifted on his feet, holding the notebook closer to his chest. He couldn’t tell Matthew the truth. He might freak out. Or, even worse, try and confront those two guys. Situations like this usually fixed themselves anyway. The people bullying him got bored and moved on to someone else. It happened all the time.

“I-it’s nothing,” he said a bit quietly. “I-I-I’ll be fine, d-don’t worry.” He decided that the subject should be changed soon. Especially since he really didn’t like the subject they were on now. The report. They could talk about that. That’s what they were supposed to be doing anyway, wasn’t it?

He looked up from the floor and met eye contact with Matthew. “Y-y-you said you had an idea? F-for the report?” he asked. He was growing calmer he talked, and was slowly becoming more opaque as well. The new subject, no matter how much he hated it, was way better than the last one.

Also, he seemed to grow a whole lot more relaxed. The grip on his notebook loosened and his shoulders dropped slightly, as he had been so tense before. He hoped over a pile of book on the floor and sat down on his own bed, turning to face Matthew. He placed the notebook next to him, but held his pencil on his hand, constantly spinning it in his hand out of a lack of something better to do.

Raivis had no idea why he felt so relaxed now. It may have been because he felt safe inside the dorm. Maybe it was because he felt safe around Matthew. He really didn’t know. All he knew is that he suddenly felt very safe inside that room. He was completely opaque now. That was the biggest plus.

Matthew frowned, but didn’t push the topic. If something happened, Raivis was just going to have to straight out say it… But what if he didn’t? What if he was being teased or something? What if it was really serious and he just didn’t want to talk about it? Matthew made a mental note to try and watch Raivis a bit more closely… Not in a stalker-y way, just to make sure his friend wasn’t getting hurt. Because if he was, Matthew would make sure there was hell to pay for his attacker….

He was glad Raivis was visible now. It was strange, if anything, talking to an almost invisible person… And it would be hard to tell whether said person had turned completely invisible or just ran off while you weren’t paying attention… He doubted Raivis would do something like that, but who knew?

“Y-y-you said you had an idea? F-for the report?”

Matthew tried to push the other thoughts out of his head, a bit unsuccessfully. The report was important, of course. He had to deal with the bullying issue later. Besides, the idea would probably make Raivis as freaked out if he had continued pressing the other issue, but it wouldn’t hurt to try… Would it? He really hoped Raivis wouldn’t hate him for this… He could just say it was a stupid idea and leave it at that, but…

“Yeah, I did,” He started before he could talk himself out of it. “Although, I’m not sure how much you’ll like it…”
He grinned crookedly, slightly regretting his decision. Raivis would probably just freak, wouldn’t he?
“See, I’m guessing you’re dreading the whole talking in front of class thing as much as I do. So, I just thought, maybe there would be a way to get you out of having to talk, while still keeping a decent score on the assignment…”
He was stalling a little, he knew, but he just kept rambling.

“And, well, I thought it’d be good if we did bears, like, polar bears, because, for one thing I can ramble on about them for a while like this without freaking out…” He avoided looking at Ravis, slightly dreading the other boy’s reaction.
“And also because, well, I had this polar bear costume… And, well, polar bears and examples don’t really have to talk… So I thought you could wear the costume and be generally adorable and stuff while I talk so you don’t like, totally freak out or something?”
He squeaked the last part out in one breath and just sat there with a half smile, half grimace plastered on his face, waiting for Raivis to have some sort of reaction so he could start apologizing for the idea. …Had he seriously said, “Be generally adorable”? Oh maple. As if this conversation wasn’t becoming awkward enough.

Raivis froze, the pencil falling onto the floor. He stared off into space, his eyes wide. “Y-y-y-you want me t-to…” Just the thought of him wearing a costume made Raivis both embarrassed and scared. He was already getting bullied. What would happen to him if everyone saw him in a freaking polar bear suit? It certainly wouldn’t turn out very good.

He looked up and stared at Matthew, blinking a few times. “Wh-what if p-people make fun of me?” he asked, sounding very panicked. He was starting to disappear from sight as he spoke. “Wh-wh-what if they b-bully me? I-I-I can’t keep g-getting bullied b-because of this.”

Notice, though, he didn’t say no. It takes Raivis a lot of courage to say no, and he isn’t totally comfortable with Matthew yet. So, really, if Matthew wanted Raivis to wear it, he couldn’t really object to it. Although he will be extremely uncomfortable with it and complain.

“I-I-I guess, if no one…i-if no one makes fun of me…” Did he seriously just say yes? Raivis even surprised himself about what he said. Maybe he did trust Matthew. There didn’t seem to be any other logical explanation as to why he would accept to wear a polar bear costume in front of the entire class.

Thankfully he was only partially transparent so it wasn’t as awkward as it could be, but still. To hide his distress, Raivis bent down to pick up his pencil off the floor. He twirled the pencil in his hand again, but this time it was proving difficult: his hands were shaking.

Matthew bit his lip as Raivis stuttered frantically, watching him flicker in and out of visibility. Well, scrap that idea. It was probably back to the drawing board-

“I-I-I guess, if no one…i-if no one makes fun of me…”

Matthew could’ve cheered with relief. He jumped up in excitement, his face glowing with happiness. He could’ve hugged Raivis, but that would’ve been a bit awkward, and probably have just made him freak out more.

“Really?” He exclaimed, a little more loudly than he meant to. “That’s awesome! I mean, you don’t have to do it if you don’t want to, but-“
Matthew stopped talking as what Raivis had said started to fully sink in.

“I-I-I can’t keep g-getting bullied b-because of this.”

His expression changed quickly from pure joy to dead serious. He stared at Raivis, half glaring, half looking a little… Scared. Thoughts and memories were flashing through his head like bolts of lightning. Fitting for the little mental storm that was raging as well. He could drop it, or he could push the subject. If he pushed it, Raivis would probably freak out even more, but if he didn’t…

Well, he had seen – Or rather been affected by the results of bullying. And he wasn’t going to let that happen again in a million years. Or ever.

“Keep,” He stated, his voice a flat monotone. “You said ‘keep’. You mean, you’re currently getting bullied. That’s why you came in almost invisible, wasn't it.”

He strode over to stand in front of Raivis, shoving books out of the way with his feet, not caring much about damaging them. He pretty much loomed over the smaller boy, still staring at him rather strangely.
“Have you told someone?” He demanded, his voice tight and worried sounding. “How long- Since- Why didn’t- Haven’t-“
He ended the jumbled excuse for a sentence with a hiss, running his hand over his face. His expression had changed to just worry now, his eyebrows so tightly knotted together they seemed fixed that way.

Raivis squeaked in surprise. He pulled his legs up and hugged his knees to his chest, staring up at Matthew with wide eyes. Why had Matthew suddenly gotten so…so scary? He was never this way before. This was exactly the reason Raivis hated strangers. He never knew what they could do to him.

“N-n-n-no one knows!” he practically screamed. He hugged his legs tighter, now completely camouflaged in the bed sheets and wallpaper. “I-I-I haven’t t-told anyone! I-i-it’s been happening s-since grade school. I-I was afraid th-the bullies would h-hurt me for telling! P-p-please don’t hurt me!”

Raivis mind seemed to switch from freaked out to defensive. This always happened when he was getting bullied, and he thought it applied right then. He suddenly jumped backwards off the bed and ran into the next room. He was about to run out of the dorm when he realized that was probably not the best idea. Instead, he ran into the bathroom.

He slammed the door behind him, not forgetting to lock it, and sat against the wall. He faced the door and hugged his knees to his chest again. As if trying to form into the wall, he scooted against it as hard as he could. Although, it didn’t really matter. He was already completely transparent. If Matthew got in, if he could get the door unlocked, he probably wouldn’t see Raivis sitting there.

Raivis really wanted to go home all of a sudden. He liked it a whole lot better there. Anyone there who would bully him would just leave him alone when he disappeared. The people here, though, followed him and found ways to pick on him, despite the fact that he was hard to see. There was one guy before that pushed him around because he could blend in with everything. That never happened at home.

Matthew felt a pang of guilt when Raivis disappeared completely. But it quickly switched to panic as Raivis presumably fled the room. He raced out after him, slipping on the scattered books and cursing, but managed to get out and see the bathroom door slam shut, pulled by an invisible hand. He raced over to the door, cursing again as the knob rattled uselessly in his hand. He pounded the door, even though he really didn’t think it would help much in this situation.

“Raivis!” He shouted through the door. He stopped pounding, his fists were sore anyway, and slammed his head against the door weakly. Damn it. He should’ve just let it drop. Then Raivis wouldn’t have ran, wouldn’t have been scared of him… It was his fault.

“Raivis, I’m sorry, I’m sorry…” He whimpered, leaning against the door and sliding to the ground. God, he was being pathetic. He didn’t even know if Raivis was listening to him. Or wanted to listen to him. If he didn’t outright hate Matthew, then he was probably scared of him.

“I’m an IDIOT, damn it!” He shouted, slamming his fist into the ground. “Raivis? Are you listening? Will you listen to me? I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you… I just- It’s just-”
He took a shaky breath, trying to calm down. Maybe if he could explain, Raivis wouldn’t be so freaked out… But that depended on whether Raivis would listen to him or not. Either way, explaining was worth a shot, even if it was a long shot.

“Raivis, really, I’m really sorry,” He began. “It’s just – I hate bullies. I hate what they do. I can’t stand it if I hear someone’s being bullied, if they could maybe go to someone to try and prevent it… I had a friend – Well, really, she was more of an acquaintance, rather than a real friend, but anyway, she used to be homeschooled… Until she had to move.”
He took another shaky breath. He really didn’t like telling this story, but if it would help…

“She got transferred to a public school,” He continued. “I didn’t stay in touch with her personally, but she had friends within the co-op group that I was friends with. Either way… I came into class one day, and everyone was either crying or close to tears. She- she was dead. She killed herself. They said there was, was a note or something. That said she just couldn’t stand it anymore. Being teased, picked on, school, a combination of a lot of things… But one of the main reasons, they think, was the bullying. They killed her. Maybe they didn’t mean to, maybe it was indirect, but they did.”

The rest of the room blurred in front of him, and he rubbed tears from his eyes.
“And that’s why I was acting like that,” He said, curling into a pathetic little ball. “If I hear about bullies or something, I just want to do something about it. I don’t want that sort of thing to happen again.”
He ground his teeth together and clenched his fists. He had been intimidating a moment ago, now he just seemed sad.
“What use is the title ‘hero’ if I can’t save people?” He shouted. “Raivis, you’re my friend, my first and right now pretty much only friend here… I don’t want something like that to happen to you.”

Raivis listened intently the whole time. Even though he was kind of scared of Matthew at the time, he felt really guilty for upsetting Matthew like that. Especially from what he had said to explain. Matthew’s friend had died because of bullying. Raivis didn’t want to die.

Slowly, he stood up, still leaning against the wall. He stood there for a long time, waiting until Matthew had finished talking. Raivis thought over every word he said, listening extremely carefully at what he had to say. Matthew had called him a friend. A real friend.

When Matthew had finished, Raivis had no idea what to say. He stood there for a while longer, growing completely opaque in a matter of seconds. He straightened up and took a long stride forward, unlocking the bathroom door. He didn’t exit, though. He stalled for another moment before he flung the door open, fell on his knees, and hugged Matthew tightly from behind.

“I-I’m sorry, Matthew,” he said quietly. He turned his head to wipe his eyes on his sleeve, then hugged his friend even tighter. “I-I should’ve told someone about it. I-I…I’m sorry.”

He really didn’t know what else to say besides that. Well, he had so many things he wished to say, but didn’t know how to say them. This usually didn’t happen to him. He never really had much to say most of the time, but that was because he didn’t want to say anything. But this time, he wanted to say so much but didn’t know how. So it was all he could do to say he was sorry and hug Matthew, which may or may not have been the best thing to do.

Matthew sat there, silent and sniffling, waiting for Raivis’ response. He could only just keep his powers under control by focusing the coldness back into his body, and now he was cold along with miserable. He wasn’t used to being cold. Thoughts whirled in his head like storm spirits, chaotic and fast, spinning around and away before he could get a grip on them. He barely registered the click of the click of the lock behind him, but being hugged suddenly snapped him back to reality.

“I-I should’ve told someone about it. I-I…I’m sorry.”

“No, I’m the one who should sorry,” he sniffled. He wiggled around to hug Raivis back, a little bit surprised to find him completely visible. He laid his head on Raivis’ shoulder, crying quietly for what seemed like an hour. It could only be a minute or two, but that’s what it felt like. Although, it didn’t really matter as much now. The tears were more happy than sad…

He pulled back enough to wipe the tears from his eyes, trying to smile.
“I-I’m okay, really,” he stammered, grinning lopsidedly. He bit his lip nervously. “…This is a total sob fest. I’d start freaking if someone came in right now.”

Okay, so maybe that wasn’t the best thing to say in this situation. But really, he wasn’t sure what to say right now. …Also, hugging and crying on one another really seemed like more of a girly thing to do… Add that to the list of reasons he didn’t want anyone walking in right now. He would be face palming right now if it wouldn’t just add more to the awkwardness of the situation.

By this point, Raivis had started crying a bit too. Not as much at Matthew, but still, he was crying. He kind of liked just sitting there with Matthew, even though it was really girly and kind of awkward, plus the fact that Matthew was a bit cold. Okay, more than a bit cold.

Raivis didn’t want to be the one to completely break the hug. He actually kind of liked it. He’s never hugged someone other than his parents, and Matthew was really nice. But it did seem like a good idea to just stop. It was possible someone could walk in, and Raivis didn’t know what he’d do if that happened.

He let go of Matthew and leaned back, now seated on the floor. He managed to smile as he wiped his eyes with the back of his hand. He really wanted to let the subject drop, but it certainly wasn’t going to at this point, especially since both of them had made a huge show of it. Still, Raivis tried to turn the subject back to less stressing matters.

“C-can we get back to the r-report?” he asked, placing both of his hands in his lap. “I-I-I’ll wear the suit, I-I guess. I-I-I don’t have to talk if I do, r-right?” Wearing the suit would probably be the best for him anyway. He didn’t have to talk, so the message got across clearer than if he did have to talk. All he had to do was stand there and not become completely camouflaged into the wall. That was a hard thing to do for him, but he’d find a way to control his stupid power.

Matthew was actually just a little bit sad that the hug had broken. Raivis was warm, and for once, Matthew was cold. Like, freezing. Last time he had been this cold was when he had gone out into a blizzard in swim trunks to see if he could actually freeze. The results of that little experiment had been a very conclusive yes, you can freeze your butt off even if you have ice powers, idiot. And now he was proving that turning his powers inward instead of outward was almost an equally bad idea. He wondered if there was any hot chocolate in the dorm.

“C-can we get back to the r-report? I-I-I’ll wear the suit, I-I guess. I-I-I don’t have to talk if I do, r-right?”

He wiped the last tears away and smiled. He would probably have to bring the subject up later, and get a teacher involved, but for now it was probably okay to let the subject drop… There had been enough dramatics for today.
“Well, the report was sorta what we should have been working on…” He laughed weakly, shivering a little. Maple. Hot chocolate first, then report. “And you totally don’t have to talk if you wear the suit. It might be a little bit difficult to anyway, since it has a mask…”

“Um, um, but first,” He said, standing up and grinning sheepishly. “Could we go capture some hot chocolate or tea or coffee or whatever you like? I just need a hot drink. I think I kinda turned the cold air I usually release like, on myself, and um… Now I’m cold. Like, really cold. Colder than wearing a swimsuit in a snowstorm, and I actually know how cold that is, believe it or not.”

He was trying to consciously release the cold air, but it didn’t seem to be working all that well. He wasn’t getting too much colder, but he really wasn’t getting any warmer… And he was afraid if he tried to just shove the coldness away from him, he would freeze everything in the room. That is, if it even worked. So for now, he would have to just stand there, being cold. Because pathetic him didn’t even know where one could find some sort of hot drink. Maple.

When Matthew stood up, Raivis stood up as well. Well, more like hopped up. He felt a whole lot more comfortable about Matthew now. Not as comfortable as he is with his parents or anything, but comfortable enough to be scared when he’s around. And this clearly showed, as he was completely visible and wasn’t shaking in the slightest. His stutter was still there, but that was normal. That never went away.

“Could we go capture some hot chocolate or tea or coffee or whatever you like? I just need a hot drink.”

Raivis nodded, a small smile starting to grow on his face. “Sure, I-I-I don’t mind,” he said, sounding more cheerful than he ever has been around people. “I-I think we have something. If not, m-maybe we can go out for something. I-it’s not too late, I-I don’t think.”

Without warning, Raivis turned on his heels and ran toward the kitchen area of the dorm. When he got there, he flung the first cabinet open and looked around. Nothing. He looked in the next cabinet. Again, nothing.

A bit confused, Raivis tilted his head a bit. He could’ve sworn he had brought tea from home. His mother had given to him before he left. He ran into the bedroom and practically dove under his bed. There was a box in there which he kept some of his things, and he quickly pulled it out and yanked it open. With a quick search in there, Raivis managed to find the small box of tea he was given.

He closed the box, shoved it back under the bed, and walked back into the kitchen area. “I-I have some tea,” he announced to Matthew. “I-I-I don’t know if you’d like it, th-though.”

Matthew smiled gratefully, about to thank Raivis, but he dashed off before he could offer a word of thanks. A bit confused by the sudden movement, he followed Raivis into the kitchen area, but Raivis just dashed past him again. Mathew stood there, blinking, dumbfounded, for a moment. Then he shrugged and just started looking for something to boil water in. He had just found a kettle when Raivis came back.

“I-I have some tea. I-I-I don’t know if you’d like it, th-though.”

“I’m sure it’s fine, sorry for making you find some…” Matthew said as he filled the kettle with water. “Honestly, I’d be happy with almost anything.”
Especially if there’s maple syrup in it, He added silently. Everything is better with maple syrup.

“You know, it’s kinda weird,” He started thinking out loud as he put the kettle on to boil. “Why do they have like, mini kitchens in the dorms? I mean, they have a microwave, a fridge, we’ve somehow acquired this kettle-“
He stopped in the middle of his rant, frowning, his eyebrows knitting together.
“I don’t even know how we got this kettle. I mean, it’s nice, but really? Half of the stuff in here could be used for some sort of chaos by people without powers, so who knows what else kind of chaos the students here create on a regular basis…”

He kept rambling as he got two mugs out for tea. Moving around was helping him warm up a little bit, and talking just helped put the awkwardness behind him.

“And also what’s weird is how we – or well, I, I think – can switch topics so easily. I mean, it’s a little bit forced, but still. I blame the homeschooling,” He laughed.
“Well, not that it’s so much of a bad thing. I ‘blame’ homeschooling for a lot of things, most of them good… Well, except for the ability to totally dominate a conversation like this. I’m barely letting you talk, sorry…”
