Matthew had just remained quiet, nodding his head occasionally, while Gilbert spoke about his childhood. Before they had both shared their life stories but with whiskey in your system, everything got an extra layer of depth and understanding. When Matt was a kid, he was always being picked on for being skinny and wearing glasses and for being the smart kid in class, and it didn't help that his younger brother was the one usually sticking up for him. Gaining his powers has since given Matt a huge shove of confidence and sense of self-awareness because knowing you could turn into a ginormous bear was a comfort against bullies.
After Matt admitted to Gil about how highly he thought of him, the blond had to chuckle when Gil's expression was of pure surprise and frankly, it made him look adorable.
"You aren't half bad, yourself. Outta all the guys at this school, I'm glad I got to be your roommate."
Now it was Matt's turn to look surprised, his violet eyes went wide and his face went red and his smile turned small and soft. Averting his gaze away to find the candle very fascinating, Matt just sat there, fidgeting his toes, grinning like a sheepish fool. The first day Matt met Gilbert, his first impression of the albino was, 'Man, this guy is way too cool...' and he felt like an awkward geek around the German. However, as it turns out, the roommates had hit it off fine and Mat was even helping Gilbert improve his marks and had gotten the guy into hockey, which was a saving grace for Matt's sanity. Even now, sitting in their dark room while the storm rage outside, drunk, Matt still help Gilbert in high regards, a figure of cool, but the German had a sweetness to him that was making Matt smile.
"Thanks," was all the Canadian boy cold mutter as he reached over and patted Gil's arm before opening his hand to be handed the emptying bottle. Biting his lip, trying to think of what to say, Matt chuckled lightly before he said, "You know the main reason I dislike coming to America? The Canadian stereotypes... I have American family and every time we visit them, they ask stupid questions..." taking a swig as he scoffed, yes Matthew scoffed, he licked his lips and grinned, smirking over at Gilbert, "Though my favourite is being asked if Canadians have pet polar bears. Though now, I guess I can tell them that I am the family's pet polar bear".
It took a moment for Matt to realize what he had said, before he burst out laughing, so hard he quickly gave Gil the bottle so he could topple over against the German's shoulder and laugh properly.
