“This is juuuuuust great...” Kiviuq huffed, walking along with his hands stuffed unceremoniously in his pants' pockets. How did he, of all the students in the Asher Academy, get selected for a Secret Santa. He didn't even know what Santa was until some older student explained it to him. He wasn't sure if it was school-wide, but he didn't like it. He wasn't exactly buddy-buddy with anyone on this campus. Out of frustration, Kiviuq kicked a pebble that littered the forest path that he was on. Out of spite, it rebounded from a tree up and into his forehead.
“Yeowwww!” he howled, gripping his face as he rubbed the tender, now red mark between his eyes. That was just peachy, now wasn't it? Soured even further, Kiviuq continued walking while Nanuq trotted alongside him. “Fantastic. Now I have a headache and I haven't even tried to come up with a present! I have no money.... what am I gonna do Nanuq?” Sighing in desperation, Kiviuq stopped and brought his palm to his face, wiping the sweat from his brow. It was another warm day out, and Kiviuq never tolerated the heat as well as the other students.
A whine stirred Kiviuq from his inner dilemma as he snapped his attention to the canine. Instead of something bad happening, the dog was carrying a stick in his jaws, his tail swishing back and forth as he wiggled his butt in the air. Kiviuq sighed at this... he should have known... that whine was not the high pitched one that preceded an episode. No... Nanuq just wanted to play. “Not now boy, I'm thinking...” Kiviuq pressed, continuing to walk onwards. Maybe he could find a shiny stone or a shell at the beach. That was pretty lame though. If this Donald character wanted a shell, he could easily go find one himself. Kiviuq was fresh out of ideas though... there was nothing that he really could give... He really didn't have any possessions besides what he wore and a few books. Oh and his knife, but there was no way that he was giving that item away. Nanuq whined again and it gnawed at Kiviuq's patience, so he grabbed the stick and hurled in into the bushes.
“Maybe I could work somewhere to get a few dollars.... Uh, this shouldn't be that hard!” sighing, Kiviuq wandered over to a flat rock that flanked the path and sat upon it. He really, really didn't want to stress over a stupid gift. He had far more important things to focus on. A few moments later, a furry white body reappeared as the large canine sat in front of the boy, whining once more with the stick in his mouth. “Nanuq I'm really not in the mood t-.... Wait a minute,” Kiviuq said, looking at the stick held within the canine's jaws. Sure, it wasn't ideal, but the wood looked to be in good enough quality and the branch had been dead for some time, so it was dry enough as well. “That's it! I'll carve something! Thanks bud,” Kiviuq said, taking the stick as he patted Nanuq tenderly.
“I think I'll carve a wolf or something. I'm pretty good at those...” Kiviuq glanced around as he retrieved his knife from its location on his hip. He probably should have waited until he got back to the dorm so he could have grabbed his thumb pad (he always seemed to bleed when he whittled), but he was eager and filled with enthusiasm. Kiviuq had just succeeded in stripping the outer bark from the branch when he heard footsteps. Someone? In the forest? Kiviuq slid his ebony glance up, almost nervous to see who it was. He was... supposed to be in class right now.
