I was just looking, I swear! {Mathias}

It was only seconds after Lili began to descend the ladder that it began to let out some louder than usual creaking, and Mathias felt himself floating in midair…. As if he were flying or something… But it only took him a millisecond to realize that the ladder had detached itself from the wall, and that him and Lili both were being sent into the ground… which just so happened to be three stories below them…

Thinking quickly though, Mathias clenched his fists together shakily, turning the ladder into a platform that could catch them in midair before they picked up too much speed and hit the ground with dire consequences.

And since Mathias was closer to the bottom of the ladder when it decided to detach itself from the building, he smacked into his makeshift net first, and not even a second afterwards, Lili landed on top of him.

But since his panic level was so high, he didn’t even realize that Lili was screaming at three times the velocity of a normal human until he wrapped his arms around her shoulders and they were safe on the ground. Safe enough so that Mathias could gingerly pull both himself and Lili off of the ground.

“Fuck!” Mathias yelled out, before he quickly covered his mouth. It was a rule of his that he didn’t cuss in front of the younger girl students unless they were okay with it. And that was, they were VERY okay with it. Like comfortable with it, and even then he still watched himself. But he hoped she didn’t mind, considering how freaked out he was. Heck, even knowing that he was on the ground now he still noticed that he was shaking quite a bit.

But it wasn’t until he stood up, did he notice what the real problem was… the world began to twirl around him. What was once a nice courtyard of grass and trees was now a spinning world of reds, yellows, blues, greens, and… oh god… He immediately tumbled back to the ground as quickly as he got up.

Then the pain set in. And boy did it set in hard. A massive headache that started at his ears and moved outwards towards his eyes. The feeling was so outrageous that even pulling himself to his hands and knees caused him to overwhelmed by dizziness.

Funny… he didn’t really think he was all that nervous… okay maybe he did let out quite the screech when the ladder first moved from the wall, (not that anyone could’ve possibly have heard it over Lili)and was still shaking about it, but now he had a headache? What could’ve... what could’ve…. Something warm was dribbling down the side of his face. And on his hands and knees, he pulled back onto his haunches and cracked his eyes open to the sight on his own blood dripping into the grass.

In a gasp he covered his mouth, and shut his eyes, trying to block out the dizziness, but feeling too overwhelmed to do lie back down the grass.

“Lil- Lili? My head---” But he couldn’t say anymore because it hurt his ears too much to talk. In fact, it almost hurt them just thinking. As if his thoughts had developed voices of their own or something. With this, he began to feel faint… as if he was going to keel over at any second… but he couldn’t keel over yet! He had to make sure Lili was okay! He had too… he had too…
He crawled over to Lili, with his eyes half shut and grinned up to her, “Are you okay?” But a stinging in his ears caused his hands to shoot up to his ears and… oops. That was where the blood was coming from….ahah.

Ahaha… Oh god… had Lili caused this massive headache? He didn’t want to think about it too much because the more he thought about the worse matters became. Not like it was her fault anyways… maybe if he just layed in the grass a moment the headache would vanish…

As soon as Lili started screaming, it was near impossible for her to stop, as if she were trying swallow rocks in order to silence herself. Only when she collided into Mathias did her screams silence, the air left in her lungs knocked out of her.

Without any breath left in her, she hardly made a sound when the continued to descend to the ground, albeit at a slower speed. Under normal circumstances, she might have been uncomfortable towards the fact he had wrapped his arms around her shoulders, but these were not normal circumstances, and the smaller teen took comfort out of the embrace. If he wasn't holding onto her, she was sure that she would fall away from the platform that the Dane had made to a gruesome end.

When they landed, Lili stumbled up, arms wrapped over her stomach to ease the flood of nausea. Dear God, she felt as if all the energy had been drained away from her, leaving a girl whom was swaying on her feet, like an invisible hand was trying to push her down to the ground. Nice, comfortable, solid ground. “Fuck!” Leonie hardly took notice of the vulgar word, looking up in worry at her new friend, only to have to turn her gaze down as he collapsed to the ground again.

Her heart froze in mid beat. Blood. Blood was spilling out of his ears and dripping down the side of his face. Small droplets of the stuff splattered into starbursts of dark red onto the grass. Lili forgot to breathe, watching with dread crawling up her spine when he mumbled her name, when he crawled on his hands and knees to her, asking if she was alright. What a stupid question! She was as good as gold in comparison to her friend. Was it even right to call him a friend anymore? The fall didn't cause this, she knew. She knew what had.. Oh, dear God.

Lili dropped to her knees, reaching out and wiping away a trail of blood on the left side of Mathias' face, only to have it replaced with even more blood. “You're..” The German's voice was hoarse, as if she had eaten thumbtacks and nails. “Mein Gott, your ears, I-I'm sorry, I'm so sorry.” Apologies weren't bandages! There was no use just mumbling apologies. Lili whimpered, keeping the rest of her 'sorry's inside, taking to trying to actually help Mathias instead.

“Oh, no, no, no, no, don't go to sleep!” Her voice shook and she tried to clean off the blood once more, only to dirty her hands from fingertips to palms. “You can't go to sleep, stay awake.” Dear God, the pain he had to be feeling must be practically dragging at his mind, hungry for unconsciousness. With wounds like these, she had found, sleeping was something one should not do. If they did fall asleep with such injuries, one may never..

“J-just..” Would laying down maybe stop the bleeding? She had no knowledge of what to do, but it seemed like it could be a good idea. “I-If you lay down, promise.. not to go to sleep, please?” Lili was sure she was confusing to listen to. 'Don't go to sleep', 'lay down', obviously if he was lying down he would be more prone to go to sleep, any fool would know that.

She had jinxed herself. Superstition was not really her cup of tea, but all that thought about singing and making the Dane's head explode, it completely and totally jinxed her. Maybe if she hadn't worried about it.. Maybe if she hadn't bothered him about going to the 'best place in the school'..

Mathias shut his eyes quietly against the air which seemed to pressing against his head heavily. Heck it even seemed to getting heavier and heavier. Shit, and there was blood getting on everything! It was everywhere… even Lili was getting covered in it!

He wanted to say that he felt bad about being so much trouble to her. About convincing her to go onto the roof when she was obviously somewhat nervous about it. And most of all about upsetting her so early in their friendship. But for some reason he wasn’t sure if it would exactly be okay for him to be apologizing in his state. Plus if he apologized he’d only end up hurting his head. Right now what he needed wa—

“Mein Gott, your ears, I-I'm sorry, I'm so sorry.”

Silence.

He needed silence. Any noise, any noise in the slightest hurt him.

Hurt him very badly. Even the annoying ass birds chirping in the trees were hurting him. The sound of the wind even. Was it even possible for his head to hurt this badly? He remembered his mom telling him of migraines she got that resulted in her being unable to turn on the lights or hear any noise in the slightest. Was that what this was?

He could now see why his mother was so whiny when she got them. They weren’t a great feeling at all. In fact they were anything but. This was seriously just his luck.

“What are you apologizing for?” Mathias smiled weakly, grabbing a weak hold upon Lili’s wrists, and rubbing them gently on his pant legs to wipe his own blood off her hands, “It-It’s alright… I know you didn’t mean too…”

Normally. Normally in this situation he would’ve been mad. He would’ve been seething with anger. But he couldn’t find the anger. No matter how hard he tried. Maybe it was because he didn’t have the energy to get mad. Or maybe it was that he couldn’t get mad at Lili. He already was much too attached to her to get too mad probably.

She seemed to be so sweet and sincere. Not at all like the type who’d hurt someone on purpose. She definitely wasn’t that type. Mathias was almost certain that she would feel bad accidently killing a fly that landed on her arm. And he could tell that she felt bad now. And he felt bad that she felt bad, and things were just a mess…

“J-just..I-If you lay down, promise... not to go to sleep, please?”
Whoa. Sleep sounded so nice right now, and that wasn’t even a lie. Like… maybe if he went to sleep this pain could vanish and leave him be… if only for a few hours.

But the panic in Lili’s voice also caused him to feel a bit panicked. What if he went to sleep and never woke up? What if his aching throbbing head decided it wanted to completely stop working and just shut down, right on the spot? Oh Lord he couldn’t let that happen ever. Ever, ever, ever.

He was much too young to die. Much too young…. He wasn’t ready for it! No way no how!

Oh but sleep sounded so nice… It sounded radiant. So radiant in fact that he crawled over to Lili, before laying his head in her lap and shutting his eyes. He wasn’t going to go to sleep… he wasn’t going… He felt his eyes flutter open to stop it from happening, but it was the hardest thing he could do.

Instead he pulled away from Lili, and rolled to his side, pulling his knees up to his chest and wrapping his arms around his knees. He placed his head in his arms.

He was going to have to go to the nurse. As much as he really didn’t like the idea, it was probably the best they could do. He wondered slightly if the nurse could even handle injuries such as this… would she even know what to do?

Of course she would! This was a school for super heroes. She had to… Math really didn’t feel like he could make it to hospital unless someone was carrying him. And he was fairly large and not very light… so it would probably just make for one huge hassle. Especially for whoever was doing the carrying.

Heck, would he even be able to make it to the nurses office without collapsing?

Would Lili be able to help him?

Well, at least help him get there? She was so small… and he wasn’t… maybe she could get him help…

“Lil- lili?” His voice came out quiet. Probably the quietest it had ever come out in his entire lifespan, which was saying quite a bit, “C-can you help me get to the nurse? O-or m-maybe to fin-find someone that can help me there?” He could hear the wibble in his voice. No frigging way. Was he crying?

Oh God… there was no way… He couldn’t remember the last time he’d cried over ANYTHING. This was too much…

The pain wasn’t that bad… was it? Maybe being helpless was just getting to him… He pulled into himself even more. He was so pathetic… why couldn’t the world just stop spinning?

This would be the part of the nightmare where she woke up. Where she woke up, crawled out of bed, and went to sleep in Vash's room, just in case her dreams were still lurking in her own sheets.
There would be no waking up. Lili was trapped in a reality that she wished dearly to escape.
But.. It didn't feel real, and she jumped when Mathias wrapped his fingers around her wrist, gently wiping the blood off her hands and onto his trousers.

“That's.. That's going to stain your clothes.” Oh god, what? Stained clothes were the least of their worries. Why did she say that? Lili couldn't stop herself from babbling on, tears springing into her vision. “I made you ruin your clothes, I'm sorry, I'm sorry!” The Germanic girl rubbed at her eyes with the heel of her palms, forcing herself to stop crying over stains. Stains! Of all things!

It was hard to stay strong, so hard, when her friend whom had been so bubbly and energetic and sweet only moments before was preparing to go to sleep in her lap one moment then rolling away. And now he was curled up on his side, legs drawn tight to his chest and face buried. 'Strong, be strong, be strong, be strong, be..'

“C-can you help me get to the nurse? O-or m-maybe to fin-find someone that can help me there?”

He spoke so softly, he stuttered, he was.. crying..? Lili wasn't sure it had been the Dane that spoke. It couldn't have been. Mathias didn't stutter, he wasn't the type of person to do that! And crying..
Her courage drained away, and the girl whimpered again, wrapping her arms around Mathias. 'Be strong, be strong! Mature people do not cry!

“J-ja, I can.. I can try, I will try..” She let go, getting to her feet and ever so carefully trying to pull her friend from the grass. Dear God, please let him have enough energy to walk half by himself, it was hard enough to just get him to his feet. Her arms felt like rubber, like the muscles and bones had been replaced with jelly.. Or was it jam? For the love of– It didn't matter. There was only one thing that was important right now, and it did not involve jam nor jelly, it involved a friend whom very well may be dying for all she knew at the moment. Honestly, the only thing keeping her standing up was the fact she still felt as if she were stuck in a dream like state, half of her mind was screaming while the other was trying to reassure itself Lili was only dreaming, only dreaming..

At the mention of staining his clothes, Mathias let out a small laugh. A small, weak laugh. It wasn’t like his ears had already stained his sweater enough as it was. Him wiping his own blood from her hands onto his pants was definitely the least of their worries.

He then felt Lili’s arms wrap around him, and almost immediately he could feel himself burying into her warmth. He knew he had always been somewhat of a heat-leech, but now he felt like he was more than ever before. It was probably because Lili was such a gentle person and she was treating him so gently that he couldn’t help himself. The only thing that was causing him to be a bit reluctant was that she was freaking out much more than she had to, and she kept talking and apologizing… didn’t she know it was okay? That he was going to be okay? He was a big boy… he’d heal. Right?

“Don’t worry about th—”He suddenly found Lili’s comforting embrace vanish into thin air, before he was being pulled to his feet… no. No, no, he wasn’t ready to stand up… he was so warm… Taking a quick rub at his watering eyes, he pulled himself upwards, with the help of Lili of course- and began to stumble towards the infirmary.

This certainly wasn’t a great alternative to laying down or sleeping, and he began to lose himself as they got closer to the nurses office, and although he was walking himself, he found that his pressure on her shoulder seemed to grow in intensity the longer the walking went on.

In fact, he was about to slip out of Lili’s grips when suddenly another student, a Hispanic looking one, dashed over and slipped underneath his free arm and helped to lift him off the ground and less off of Lili.

It was just about here when Mathias completely gave into the dark and fell unconscious, leaving Lili and the helpful new kid (Who is Chile, yes.) to carry him the rest of the way to the infirmary.

When Mathias finally regained his consciousness, he found that everything that surrounded him seemed to be fuzzy, and riddled with bunches of bright, multicolored dots. Of course there was still a deep panging in his head, but the pain seemed to nulled a bit, which probably meant he was given some kind of pain killer while he was knocked out.

Not that he minded the painkiller… it was better than having to deal with that intense headache he’d just had. Heck, he was beginning to wonder if there actually was anything worse than that feeling, but then he remembered breaking his arm, and he couldn’t remember which of the two had been more painful.

At least noise didn’t hurt him when he broke his arm… speaking of noise… Mathias found that the silence of the room was probably the most pleasant thing about it. No more birds, or screaming teenagers, more crying, not even his own voice was heard... it was just silence.

In a normal situation though, Mathias would’ve pulled himself up out of the bed, but he found that even just lying there was proving to be quite overwhelming for him, so he simply just pulled his hand up to his forehead and pressed his palm to it..
It had been bandaged up. It wasn’t thick bandage or anything, but moving his hands over to his ears, he could tell that the bandages there were much thicker, and something was shoved into his ears to stop them from gushing blood.

Letting out a small chuckle, Mathias realized that the ears were probably one of the more stranger places that one could have blood gushing from, but it happened, to him of all people… why was he not surprised?

He never really had the best of luck… maybe that was one of the reasons he was so superstitious. He felt like when he carried his lucky objects around that maybe he’d have some kind of good luck… But today that wasn’t the case… letting out a sigh, he shoved down the blankets that were wrapped around his arms, only to notice that his sweater had been pulled off. He really hoped it wasn’t ruined… although even if it was, he was still going to toss out those lucky marbles. Their luck seemed to have ran out.

“Miss Zwingli, how did this happen?!”

The nurse's words still chattered on repeat inside the Germanic's mind, asking over and over and over. Of course, she had told the nurse that she had accidentally used her powers against the older boy, earning herself a detention slip and half a lecture from the woman until Lili started crying all over again. The nurse, probably shocked, discontinued the lecture and comforted her for a moment before scurrying off to attend to some other injured teen.

God, Lili was sure she hadn't cried so much in her entire life before. Her family wasn't the crying type, and she had never, ever seen her brother cry, so she often followed suit and refrained from.. that. But today, her nerves had been stretched so thin she was afraid of snapping at any moment. All she wanted to do was sleep, sleep, and sleep some more. But there was still something, someone, to attend to.

She had scrubbed her hands so vigorously to rid herself of the bloodstains on her palms that they smelled as if they were made of the soap she had used, but at least there was not a drop of blood left as a reminder. On the brightside, her hands were now ridiculously soft. Lili was half thankful she had no idea how to use makeup, because if she had, she might have been wearing mascara, and with her luck it would not be waterproof.

Mathias had chuckled as she walked in to the room, and she noticed he had pushed away his blankets. Despite the fact he didn't really need the blankets in the first place, her first reaction was to cover him up all over again, as if his injuries would get even worse without some layer of sheets. This of course was a silly thought, because his injuries were in his head anyway, and she wasn't about to pull the blanket over his face!

The bandages were wrapped tightly around his skull, and it almost appeared that his hair was resisting being bound, for small tufts of blond were trying to escape, sticking out in odd directions. Not that his hair wasn't already styled in a.. stick-y up-y sort of way.

She was going to say something, but stopped herself. Unless he had super hearing, which he didn't, he probably wouldn't be able to hear anything she said. Instead, Lili just moved to awkwardly sit next to his bed, resting her hands on the very edge of the bed's mattress. What she really wanted to do was just climb onto the bed and go to sleep herself, as Mathias had when she and a Chilean boy brought him to the infirmary. Oh, dear, she had never even asked that boy for his name in order to thank him properly. That would be something she would have to do if she found him again..

The weariness was probably a horrible side effect from screaming, but, to be quite frank, she deserved it. There were worse things than being tired that could have happened to her, and there was a victim of that 'worse thing' right in front of her. Shifting in the uncomfortable seat she had found, Lili tried to smile at her friend, but it probably turned out as a half-grimace. “The nurse said you're going to be fine,” she added gestures that she hoped might help convey what she was trying to say, but she had never used sign language in her life! It probably made her look like a flailing idiot, for all she knew.

The second Lili paced into the room, Mathias immediately felt his mood lift a thousand percent. He felt as if he’d never ever been happier to see anyone in his entire life. He seriously had to hold himself back from completely just jumping down from the bed and wrapping his arms around her.

He’d just… he’d felt so bad about what had happened. She was new. She didn’t deserve all of this to be thrown upon her the second she’d gotten here. If the same thing had happened to him at a new school, he had no idea WHAT he would’ve done. And considering this, Lili was definitely handling it well. In fact, she was handling it very well.

…and yet.. Mathias could see that she had been crying. Her eyes were glassy and somewhat bloodshot, and her cheeks were a bright red in complexion. Well brighter than usual… shoot. Had he done this? Caused a new girl to cry? It wasn’t her fault! Oh God she must’ve felt terrible! She must’ve been so scared and frightened! She was probably feeling as bad as he was! Looking at her though, he could certainly tell. She looked like she was sick herself, and she wore huge bags under her eyes as if she hadn’t slept in days.

He watched as she attempted to smile, but it only turned out to a sort of half grin, and as a result, Mathias focused his gaze to the left, trying to avoid her eye contact in embarrassment. Why couldn’t things be easier? Why couldn’t he just go about his da-

“The nurse said you're going to be fine,”

Oh he could hear it in her voice... she was definitely tired… she looked tired and the only thing her speaking did was confirm her tiredness. And she seemed to be doing some strange dance moves to boot… was he missing something? A small chuckle escaped his lips, and he shook his head.

Deciding that he didn’t feel like answering that or speaking, which was probably a first for him, he leaned forwards slipping his arms around Lili’s waist, he hoisted her onto the bed with him, an event which required quite an amount of effort on his part. He could feel his head throbbing again, but not in pain, more or less just like his heart had moved up into his brain and was pumping blood from there.

He let out a deep breath of air, before laying back onto the pillow and pulling Lili down with him, trying to think of what to do next.. He honestly didn’t know…

So instead he just opened his mouth and let the stupidity flow.

“You know Lili…” His voice was rather calm and quiet. Oh he was so out of it, “I’m sort of glad that this happened… Because, this may sound strange but I’m glad this happened because now you’ll remember me… well… it may be a bad thing to remember me for but… but you get what I mean and… I think we can be friends because of it… no wait..” Mathias honestly had no idea what he was saying… and yet, he meant it all with his heart… he had really, really grown to adore this young girl in a matter of a few hours. He felt like he had known her for such a long time too…

He gently slid his arm around her shoulder, “Sorry if don’t make any sense… I kind of feel woozy…” And exhausted… he forgot to add that. A few more hours of sleep would probably do him some good. Yes… just a few more hours sounded good enough…

But he found his gaze travel back upwards to Lili, just enough so that he could wrap his body around her warmth a bit more, “Thank you for worrying about me…” He said lightly, before shutting his eyes a bit, “Maybe next time the tour won’t be as dangerous…”

Exhaustion numbed Leonie's senses to a point where she hardly realized that Mathias had yanked her onto the bed, and she didn't fight against him in the least. Not that she would fight against him in any other circumstances really. She might have squeaked a protest, something like that, but it felt so.. nice. Nice. So, so very nice to be off of an uncomfortable chair, to not be standing, to just be safe on a mattress. Almost immediately she curled up against her friend, letting out a sigh.

Ahh, his words like a lullaby almost, something only her mind in this current state could probably come up with, considering he was just mumbling.
“Glad this happened.” Oh, she was happy, thankful that this happened. Not about the falling incident, no, but that she had met such a wonderful person. But she still felt so bad to have caused so much pain to him! And meant to open her mouth to agree with Mathias, or maybe apologize again, but only was able to muster a nod instead.

“Would never forget you,” Lili murmured, feeling as if she were already asleep and this was just a dream, and to speak meant to try and form words while feeling like she were underwater. She nuzzled against the Dane's arm, hardly surprised at the fact it had appeared out of no where. “Nn, you make perfect sense..” The girl yawned quietly, raising a hand to cover her mouth and blinking a few times before allowing her eyes to close.

It was amazing how a death-defying experience could bring people together. The only person she would feel comfortable being this close to was her own brother, and that was actually sort of a given. Many people felt like they could.. cuddle? Was that the right word for this right now? Honestly, she was surprised she had been able to form normal English sentences at this point. Then again.. Had she spoken in English? Oh, she was just warm, it was hard to remember what she had even said before, or if she had said anything at all, let alone if she was speaking coherent English.

Her mind cleared for just a moment, just a moment that allowed her to understand and comprehend what Mathias had said, and opened her eyes again. Even though to do so it felt like she were trying to move bricks with her eyelashes. “You're vel.. welcome.” Lili closed her eyes, clinging back to her warm friend, continuing. “I.. Thank you, for you.” She was sure she had said this in English, for the words felt clumsy in her own mouth. “Danke shön.” There, that felt.. so much better. Of course, he might not understand what she had said, but it was more for herself than for him.

The smell of medicine and cleaners seemed to fade away, being replaced by the smell of the Dane, shampoo and all. Her mind finally shut down, trying to keep this peaceful memory burned into her mind before she went unconscious, oh Dear God, let her remember it later. She didn't need to remind herself, for she hadn't been lying when she said she would remember Mathias, and the events that she had shared with him.

Lili smiled, then allowed herself to be taken by sleep.
