“Late as usual…”
Matt sighed with patience and sat back against the tree he was sitting under. The day wasn’t too hot today for there was a good layer of clouds in the sky, promising an evening rain. Even so, there remained a fair number of students out in the open air, talking amongst themselves, laughing, and seemingly having a good time. Matt watched them for a bit, one of his books open in his lap through which paragraph he had been on was forgotten by then. Music played abound his neck from his headphones and he was not trying to look like a sad loser sitting by himself but rather someone who in fact was waiting for someone.
Since arriving at Asher, Matthew hadn’t really seen his younger brother or talked to him really, something that bugged him but he had yet to make a complaint about it. He understand that his brother had an established life here, had his friends, and spending time with his technically older brother wasn’t that important. Tapping his pen upon his book’s page, the Canadian watched a couple walk past, hand in hand, a group of boys throw a football between them, and a couple of girls taking selfies by a fountain. Biting his lip, Matt leaned his head back against the trunk, muttering to himself the lyrics from the Beatles song he vaguely heard from his earphones, and yawned. Slowly he was beginning to adjust to his new life here but it was slow going and difficult for him to be so open about his powers to teachers and such.
The more Matt watched, the more his thoughts began to drift and he became an overlooked, invisible observer to the students, who looked so normal but weren’t, because the only reason that any of them could be there was having powers. Finding himself wondering what any of them could do, he watched one boy momentarily disappear, another girl make a book levitate, while her friend changed her skin colour purple, to blue, then a combination of both. Finding himself fascinated with the entire scene, it still made Matt uncomfortable to think of himself changing at will around a group of friends, hanging out nonchalantly as a huge polar bear. A small bird flitted down beside him and Matt smiled and whispered hi to begin a short conversation with the bird, agreeing with the small creature that bugs were delicious indeed. When the bird finally flew off, Mat looked up to see that still; he had yet to have been noticed, oh well.
As the minutes ticked on, Matt’s eyes grew heavy and before he knew it, his pen rolled onto the grass and his head lolled to the side and he fell asleep. Alfred was sure as hell taking his sweet ass time to show up and Matt had had a late night previously.
