`AFONSO RODRIGO MANOEL SILVA!
`The whole slew blossomed beautifully, and I was beside myself!
NICKNAMES Fonzo, Fonzie, Affie. (The latter not being liked very much at all.)
AGE Eighteen
GENDER Male
ETHNICITY Portuguese
TEACHER OR STUDENT Student
GRADE Senior / 12th
SPECIAL ABILITY(s)
>> Clairvoyance -- "the ability to discern a person's location not in the observer's presence", according to the dictionary. In layman's terms, Afonso just needs to think hard about a person and from this determine whereabouts they are, or possible glimpses into what they're doing. The better his relations with said person, the more accurately he can determine their location, i.e., a close friend or family member in comparison to a complete stranger. This said though, he's not got a fantastic grasp of it and struggles placing injured people or can have issues pinpointing people perfectly; instead getting a more general and vague area than he'd really like. Say, a floor of a building as opposed to a particular room. But practice makes perfect, and that's really what he's at Asher for. Perhaps he could learn to apply his ability to something a bit more useful than figuring out where his next class is or checking what his friends are getting up to.
Afonso first discovered he could "find people" when he was seven, during a rather chaotic Saint John's Day festival. Easily impressed and captivated by the lights, music and various stalls about, he'd wandered off from his parents and after a short while became rather distressed by the large crowds and getting tapped around the head with garlic. Unhappy and confused, he focused hard on where he had left his parents to wander, and found himself thinking they were somewhere else instead. Heading in that direction he found them again. It took him a fair few years to establish that he could control this himself, but experimenting with it later on he found he couldn't find objects, which was a bit of a disappointment when he forgot where he'd left them. But winning every game of hide and seek certainly seemed to make up for things at the time.
`So I gave into your love, as you rapturously commanded!
>> Food -- But hey; that's a given, right? Who doesn't love a good meal! That aside, Afonso is happy to eat pretty much anything, and isn't too fussy when it comes to presentation. After all, food's about the taste, who cares what it looks like? The boy has a strong affinity for bacalhau though. Or "codfish", to the foreign folk. It's just, really good, in pretty much anything he can think of. Even when badly done it's still enjoyably rubbery and good to chew on, he'd be pretty content eating it every day. Salt is a staple too; and he's developed a pretty bad (not to mention rude) habit of adding an inordinate amount of salt to his food before tasting it, on the belief that "salt = flavour" and it can only make things taste better.
>> Fairytales and Poetry/Literature -- ... hush you. Everyone likes a good story every now and again. And there's something about fairytales he finds oddly satisfying. Perhaps it's the simple pleasure of a happy ending every time, he's not sure. But he loves them to pieces. Afonso's quite appreciative of literature, and more often than not has a Pessoa or Saramago book wedged somewhere down the bottom of his schoolbag. He'll whip it out if he ever feels like having a bit of a read; which isn't a common occurrence for him him, but a couple pages is more than enough to spur a bit of pondering, which is all he's really looking for from books.
>> Sleep -- Now this is something Afonso can value pretty highly, since he's shockingly lazy most of the time because it's just a real nice thing. If there isn't time for a full 8 hours sleep then a good long nap/rest is just as good. You can't be the best you can without rest right? So the more the better, surely. or so he'd like to think Sleep is pretty much his favourite thing. More so than food probably. Plus, if you're having a good dream sleep is just as good as (if not better than) being awake- it wouldn't be uncommon to catch the boy snoozing between class changeover or spending a lot of lunch break heading back to the dorms for a nap & a snack.
>> Sport -- Futebol, specifically. (And that would definitely be futebol, not soccer.) It's a fantastic sport, and just such a good time. Afonso finds it as something of a stress relief and a good place to meet people, he's more inclined towards group sports, enjoying playing off the efforts of others for a team win. He's enthusiastic on Surfing and Jogo do Pau too, but practicing at this (and finding a sparring partner) seemed a bit less plausible since coming to Asher. He'd like to take up Fencing, since the aspect is pretty similar, but it still seems ever so slightly outlandish to him. Perhaps another time.
>> Coffee -- The perfect companion to a nice plate of toast with a good slathering of jam to kick off the morning!and much better than tea. seriously. The stronger the coffee the better, to dilute it with milk would be a crime. As a side note, Afonso does like his drink too; Port Wine and Aguardente being his favourite. It tastes good. (And makes him feel slightly drowsy.) But unsure as to whether alcohol would be allowed into Asher or not, and too anxious to ask about the rules on it, he just stashed a small bottle of firewater under his bed in the dorm. Which actually tastes pretty good stirred in with some good coffee, making a really nice "café com música". But hey, that bottle's a secret, shh. until it runs out anyway.
>> Dancing / Music -- Like nobody's watching. But, only when nobody's watching, of course. He'd like to think he's a pretty good dancer but, he gets the feeling that he'd be kidding himself if he said that. But it won't stop him from tapping his feet to some good music-- Fado's pretty nice-- and swaying around a bit. He'll just sort of hum and sing under his breath to music too, or maybe take a breather to have a little pluck at his guitar, but he's no grand singer and will tend to keep this to himself.
>> Water / Exploring -- Well, it's good for drinking, but that's not what he means exactly. He likes bodies of water. Fish ponds are alright, but what he's really fond of is the sea. Or a nice lake, river, lagoon or something. He'd be a liar if he said he wasn't intrigued by the scooped out cove on the east side of the island, or the waterfalls and the pair of odd looking little islands just beyond that. He'd love to just, swim over there at one point and spend a day or two just wandering about the whole place and adventure a bit. Maybe draw up a little map of the place-- but that's impractical. (And quite probably against the rules.) But hey, a kid can dream, right?
>> Lavanda -- It just smells fantastic and reminds him of home. What could be better? Afonso likes flowers in general, going for a walk and picking a few to press is always nice and relaxing. As long as the flowers aren't red-- that's bad luck. Other than the beach and his bed, flower beds are the boy's usual haunt.
>> Roosters / Bunnies -- They're pretty cool, it has to be said. Especially those feisty little black ones. After hearing an old legend about the creatures he quickly became impressed with the bold little birds and they soon became his favourite animal. And rabbits? Well, they're just precious- a lot less standoffish than cats but not as overwhelmingly energetic as a dog; a solid compromise.
>> Banter -- Everyone likes a good laugh, right? And there's nothing like a bit of playful teasing between friends. He's a fairly sensitive person though, and takes note not to push this too far-- a bit of playful teasing is only a slight step from mockery-- but, he's only human and has occasional lapses of judgment.

He's a fairly sensitive person though, and takes note not to push this too far-- a bit of playful teasing is only a slight step from mockery-- but, he's only human and has occasional lapses of judgment.
>> Rain / Cold -- Eugh. It's like the sky is crying. Afonso loves water, but not when it's falling from the sky. Even more so when it's cold outside. (Summer rains are nice though. Good, warm rain.) Any kind of weather demanding more than a thin sweater is too cold, and he'll either be bundled up in layers and layers, or curled up against a radiator somewhere.
>> Loud / Obnoxious People -- It's great that your voice is strong and all but, can't you use that for singing? Or debating? Afonso doesn't appreciate loud noises. If it's not good music or a fire bell, it's not something that's meant to be loud. It should be put to good use, or kept to oneself. But when a person is loud and obnoxious-- could there be a worse combination? He'll just try and distance himself from these people. They're a pain.
>> Hard/Frequent Work / Homework / Just, Work in General -- Afonso is by no means a workaholic, and really doesn't like work of any sort. While having no objection to working hard voluntarily and out of his own accord, if he doesn't want to do something, he doesn't see any point in doing it whatsoever. It's just so much effort that could be channeled elsewhere. And homework-- good grief. That is just, an absolute enigma. If you've just finished a hard day of school, why work more when you leave? What is the point? He'd much rather just have an extended school-day and no homework to cut into his spare time whatsoever. This isn't to say he doesn't get work done, but he'll leave it to the last possible moment and grumble and complain all the while.
>> "Fancy Dress" / Formal Clothes -- They look fantastic, but, he wouldn't wear it himself. Fancy clothes are just, pinchy or itchy or scratchy most of the time, and he'd rather just avoid them all completely. If by some odd chance he'll ever have to go anywhere that requires such a dress code, he'll either avoid going entirely or dress as casually as is passable.or be forced into the right kind of clothing.
>> Neat Freaks / The Overly-Organised -- If Afonso has set something down, he means to leave it there. If he has put a sock in the bathtub, it was planned. Books on the floor, shirts stuffed under his bed, stuff strewn everywhere-- it's meant to be there. It's his own little "organised mess". He knows where everything is, and he's perfectly content with that. No thanks roommate, you don't need to move any of it, really~!
>> Physics / Biology Class -- They're such a bore, if he's brutally honest. He'll probably not find use of anything he learns in these classes, so he'll take it as a free period and try and sleep it away or skip them instead. This said, he adores Chemistry though. It's very straightforward and "clicks" for him. Plus, what'll he ever need three sciences for? One should do him just fine, right?
>> Arguing -- He can be rather submissive, and would rather avoid debate and arguments whenever possible. He'll most likely dismiss the whole affair or just back down. It's just too energy intensive, not to mention irritating. Especially if it's about people's beliefs-- you're not going to shift that person's way of thinking anytime soon, so just, calm yourself and take it somewhere else please.
>> Greasy Food -- ... no thank you. While he's not much of a fussy eater, if he can see grease settling on it or otherwise, he won't stick it anywhere near his mouth. The smell also makes him feel slightly queasy. He isn't used to greasy & very oily foods, they prompt stomach aches and produce far too rich a scent, in his own opinion.
>> Complicated Technology -- He can just about manage to operate his phone, and that's the extent of his ability. The boy is pretty much technologically inept; he struggles with laptops and fails to fully understand how to use the microwave. Though he won't be needing that anyways, that isn't to say that he isn't irritated by this at all- the observant and sneaky can probably catch him muttering in confusion over his mobile, or having a onesided argument with the microwave over who's better at cooking. Afonso's not a fan of the needlessly complex- less is more, as far as he's concerned.
>> Solitude -- While Afonso does like to have himself a bit of "alone time" every once in a while, generally for naptime or some reading, he despises being by himself for an extended period. He needs some kind of company, being by himself is no fun. Not all the time anyways, he becomes rather miserable quite easily.

FEARS
>> Agoraphobia -- Despite managing to find his way back to his parents that June evening, he's still pretty petrified of crowds. (And isn't too enthusiastic on garlic either. That festival did him next to no favours.) As such, he really hates lesson changeover, and tries to either get to his next class as quickly or as slowly as he possibly can, in attempt to avoid the swarm of people in the halls. He finds Asher kind of unnerving sometimes; what with all these kids with powers walking about, getting stuck in a crowd of them doesn't seem particularly safe to him at all. Especially if a fight or something breaks loose.
>> Not getting a better grasp of his power -- Afonso isn't exactly impressed with his power. He doesn't find it entirely useless; he knows it could be useful somehow. Hopefully. But he's worried he won't get any better at it, and then it really would be useless. And then what would he do? If he can't pinpoint people properly, is there really any point of him studying at Asher? He'd probably have to go get a desk job, or be a fisherman or something else boring and while that's all well and good and fairly nice, he'd like to do better.

QUIRKS
>> Easily Distracted -- Very very easily. It could be pretty much anything; a colourful butterfly, the sort of faint sound of someone walking past him playing music through a headset, a funny looking cloud or tree, anything. Afonso will pretty willingly drop whatever he's doing to stare at it for a while, touch it, or hum that tune to himself respectively.
>> Short Tempered / Brusque / Not That Tactful -- Afonso isn't a terribly patient child, and is prone to snapping at people every once in a while if they've inconvenienced or irritated him. He won't beat around the bush when it comes to actually confronting others and is more than ready to speak his mind. He's not one to get properly angry very easily, but his temper coupled with him not very tactful can have him come across as being a little more brusque and abrasive than is comfortable. He needs a little direction when it comes to language; there's a big difference between "Hey, did you get a haircut?" and "Whoa, what happened to your hair?", but he's not very good at seeing that.
>> Superstitious -- While Afonso isn't one to go out searching for good luck charms like clovers or anything, (he won't complain when he finds a free penny on the floor though!) he's more than ready to try his best and protect himself from bad luck. He'll make it a point to avoid lilies, chrysanthemums and any kind of red plants, along with the typical distancing oneself from walking under ladders and crossing black cats' paths. He finds the crucifix he always keeps laced around his neck a strong comfort, and it wouldn't be an uncommon sight to catch him running it though his fingers and muttering a quick prayer to himself every once in a while.
>> Fidgety -- He can't sit still very well at all, and tends to try and busy his hands with something; switching a pen around, fiddling with his ponytail or tugging at the fraying bits of the ribbon he ties it back with. Come to think of it, maybe he should cut that thing off...

Afonso can be quite the mixed bag most of the time. Dependant on how much sleep he gets, the boy can be kind of unpredictable and touchy, but generally, he gives off a first impression of a quiet, collected and disciplined individual. He isn't one to mess about in class and has a strong tendency to try and get himself from A to B with as little fuss as possible, giving a slight impression of being shy and somewhat reclusive. People that get to know him though will find that that is just a sort of unintentional façade. He's a very calm, laid back person, but quite affectionate and open once he's befriended someone.
He's a determined fellow, and stubborn as a mule-- once he's set his mind on something there's pretty much no stopping him whatsoever. Whether this is a good or a bad thing lies pretty heavily on the context, but he isn't one to give up easily. When the going gets tough, the tough get going-- Afonso firmly believes that if you set your mind on something and work at it hard enough, it can (and will) get done. The boy sees things through to the very end, and while he might be reluctant to get going with something (especially if it's schoolwork) you can guarantee he'll finish it. He does show a rather proud/ambitious streak from time to time, and will often bite off much more than he can chew, against his own discretion. But he'll push through, even if it takes a bit of grumbling and whining to get it all done.
His one-track-minded determination to one side, he's a very affectionate and friendly person, and likes nothing more than a bit of fun. He adores exploring to no end, and it's only ever more fun with company. The more the merrier! Afonso really likes having other people around him, and really tries to fill whatever time he as outside of studies in Asher with anything he deems "fun". Going down by the beach for a swim or to light a little fire in the evening with friends is always good fun. But he does value time by himself also, and greatly appreciates a long quiet walk through the trees on the eastern end of the island too. If anything, he likes a kind of balance of things. Sleep and work, company and solitude. As long as it's all in good balance, he can be generally found in a good mood.
Afonso can be a bit of a flirt sometimes; he's not much of a romantic at all, but just finds a lot of fun in it if anything. He's a truly luckless romantic, and is actually pretty clueless as to what he'd have to do in a relationship and avoids that as a result- but there's nothing like a bit of fun and tease, right? He's a very playful and snarky individual around people he knows well enough, and will be happy to banter about with them whenever. He adores games and playing with others, reaffirmation of his standing within a group via tricks, pranks and games helps reassure him as to "where the line is" with individuals, to make sure games remain just that, a bit of fun and banter- he's not out to inconvenience others. Afonso can however be more that a bit thickheaded and oblivious at times and while it's fairly unintentional, he can be insensitive and tactless, which doesn't really help his case much at all.
Afonso can come across as having a somewhat abrasive personality sometimes, but those willing to put up with him will find a loyal, trustworthy friend in the end of things.

`And this is like I've always dreamed! Cobblestones and dusty feet!
[/ul]The embrace was quite comforting, to say the least. Ever since the initial blackout in the manor, Afonso had been feeling more than a bit uneasy. But to find company again- especially that of family- was a real relief. He felt much safer with those arms laced around him, the simple reassurance of having a familiar face around feeling rather overwhelming. Clinging back onto Antonio, he let the slight warmth of the other quell his fears for a few minutes, barely registering the other's remark-- something about, appreciation-- before cocking his head to inspect the barn a bit more thoroughly. He felt he could direct his focus solely on their surroundings now that he had someone else to watch his back, and scanned the room some more.
The light- or more appropriately the lack thereof- wasn't ideal, and no matter how much he blinked and tried to focus, his eyes just wouldn't adjust to the gloom of the place. Whatever wasn't exposed by the staggered rays of moonlight filtering through the entrance was pretty much indiscernible to him. He wasn't anywhere near ready to pry the two towering doors at the entrance any further open for more light though, and so long as his brother's arms were clasped that tightly around him, he wasn't going anywhere anytime soon anyway.
But Antonio did decide to let go of him after a short while. That hug couldn't last forever anyways, there was work to be done in here. He wasn't exactly certain how he felt about the criticism made about the broom handle though. It was a perfectly good weapon, as far as he was concerned. It was sturdy, long, it had a nice weight to it-- and it had kept him alive so far, had it not? In fact, Portugal had become rather affectionate of the thing. It had gotten him out of some tough spots so far. And besides, he had no interest in a sword, or an axe, or whatever they'd find back there-- as useful as they may have seemed. He wouldn't use them. They could always just, take the weapons back for some of the others in the manor though, right? Someone else would probably appreciate those.
Part of him wanted to spend the next ten minutes or so explaining this to Spain. But that was probably a bit foolish. He watched the other proceed cautiously forward though, and quickly decided that "Doing as he did" was probably not the wisest course of action and definitely not what he felt like doing at all. Squinting desperately into the the further reaches of the barn, the south facing side of the building looked like it was almost lined with stacks and stacks of haybales. That's where he'd go.
Scuffling as discreetly and quietly as he could over to the things, he studied the stack with his hands. His eyes really weren't proving helpful at all at the minute; his hands and ears would have to serve for him in here, or until they could get some more light. Afonso buried one end of the wooden shaft into the nearest bale, and using it as a fulcrum, heaved himself atop the thing. He reclaimed the broom handle and went back to following his little brother, albeit parallel to him and a fair few feet more off the ground. Relying now on his hearing, he assumed Antonio had stopped moving, and squatted on the hay in waiting.
He felt pretty satisfied with the little vantage point he had achieved. He could just about see the dappled light seeping through the doors, and with the little added height he now had, he felt he could probably protect Spain a bit better. If anything came for them now, he was as ready as he'd ever be.
`That's the way it should always be; head over heels and deftly! Wonderful and healthy!
