`ELISE VAN GENT!
`YOU KNOW IM NOT MUCH BETTER WITHOUT YOU!
NICKNAMES Eli
AGE 17
GENDER Female.
ETHNICITY Belgian. Flemish, to be exact.
GRADE 11th, Junior
SPECIAL ABILITY(s) Bone manipulation.
Elise can manipulate the bones in her own body. She is able to heal broken bones, generate new bone mass and control the density and weight of her bones.
To attack she can shape her bones into blades, sticking out of her skin, or use them as projectiles. A preferred method of hers is to shoot sharp pieces of bone out of her fingers like darts, or to make her hands into claws.
Defensively, Elise can form protective shields around her limbs that are made out of bones. She makes these of denser than usual bones, to make them stronger. They slow her down however, since they are also heavier than usual. When fleeing, she can make her bone less dense, to make it lighter so she can run faster. Though when she does this, it makes her more vulnerable when she is hit with a physical attack.
Due to her powers, her pain threshold is unusually high, though breaking and rearranging her bones still hurts her. Physical injuries heal rather fast, though not immediately. It often takes a few minutes for a wound to close up when she retracts a bone that was sticking out of her skin.
Elise’s powers are however limited to her own bones, and her own body. Once the bones leave her body, her control over them is very limited. The closer her bones are to her body, the more power she has over them. When they are about a meter away from her, she can no longer change their trajectory or make them return to her. Neither can she control someone else’s bones.
Sometimes she unwittingly uses her powers when she feels strong emotions like anger or fear, as if the bones in her body already know when they might be called upon for help. When this happens, Elise will for example have formed her hands into claws before she even realised she had done so.
HOW DID THEY FIGURE IT OUT?
Elise was never a cautious child. She loved to play outside, run, climb and fall, and she always came home with new cuts and bruises. These minor injuries never seemed to bother her, so from the start it was clear that her tolerance for physical pain was a bit higher than average. Due to her somewhat reckless behaviour it was only a matter of time before she would break a bone though.
When Elise was ten years old, she climbed a tree and fell out, breaking her arm when she landed on it. At first she cried, obviously, because it hurt like hell. Somewhere on the way to the hospital she stopped crying. Her parents thought it might be the shock, though once she was examined by a doctor at the hospital there seemed nothing wrong with her arm. A precautionary x-ray showed that her arm had healed perfectly in a matter of minutes.
At first there was the suspicion that Elise might have healing powers, though there never was any affect to her cuts and bruises before. Elise started to experiment, and found out that if she concentrated really hard, her minor injuries would heal quite fast. However no matter how many times she tried to heal someone else’s wound, she couldn’t even close the smallest cut. Then one time, she was trying to heal a cut on her mother’s finger, her hand over the cut and her eyes squeezed shut in concentration. Suddenly she felt a sharp pain in her hand, and when she looked to see what had cause it, she saw that her bones were sticking out of her fingers. Needless to say, she screamed, and gave her mother a fright as well. After that initial pain it stopped hurting, though her fear didn’t subside. It took a few hours for her to calm down enough for the bones to retract and her fingers to heal up.
For a long time she didn’t use her power, though eventually curiosity got the better of her and once again she started to experiment. She found out she could do much more than just heal a broken arm or sharpen her fingers. She could control every bone in her body, rearrange them and grow new ones. It frightened her, though at the same time she couldn’t help being fascinated. As Elise used her powers more and more, she found out that once she repeated an action more often, it eventually started hurting less and she learned to control her bones without flinching.[/ul]
`YOU STOLE MY HEART THEN YOU KICKED IT ASIDE!
Good food. Elise can be a picky eater. If something is badly prepared, she’s likely too polite to say something about it, though she will definitely drop hints.
Waffles, chocolate and other sweet things. Elise has an ever demanding sweet tooth.
Comics. Especially the Belgian kind that she grew up with. Suske & Wiske, Tintin, the Smurfs, etc.
Cooking. This goes without saying hand in hand with her love of good food.
Flea markets. You never know what treasures you can find there. She loves to stroll around and see what second hand beauties she can take home.
Kids. Elise adores children and would love to raise some of her own one day.
Skirts and dresses. She doesn’t mind a pair of jeans either, but this girl’s legs were made to be shown off.
Animals. Her favourite are of the cute and furry kind.
Colour! Elise cannot live in a grey world. She prefers bright colours and reflects this in her bright personality and colourful clothing.
Cartoons. No matter what people say, you’re never too old for those;
The Saxophone. Elise loves jazz, and she sometimes dabbles in it with her saxophone.
Family. Even though not all of her family members were always around for her, they’re still family and she can’t help but love them.
ELISE DISLIKES
Being pushed around. This is obviously not something anyone would enjoy, and Elise is no exception.
Disgusting food. If it doesn’t taste nice, Elise won’t eat it. Or she will at least complain about it (however not always to the face of the one who prepared it).
The pain that comes with her power. Certain actions she can do without too much pain now, though she always feels an unpleasant sting. Larger and more radical changes in her bone structure cause her more pain though.
Being alone. Elise tends to get bored easily when she’s on her own. She prefers to be surrounded by family and friends.
Sexism. Over time Elise may have become quite a bit girlier, though she hasn’t completely lost her wild streak. She hates it when people say she can’t do something, or think she needs protecting just because she’s a girl.
Grudges. Elise has no vindictive personality, and she doesn’t enjoy bearing grudges. When she has an argument with someone, she would rather solve it sooner than later, after which to forget that she was ever angry in the first place.
Bone jokes. You’re asking whether she has a boner? Oh, ha ha. How long did it take you to come up with that, five whole seconds? Please grow up.
Rainy weather. The sky is where the sun belongs. Rainy clouds have nothing to seek there.
Not being included. Purposefully excluding Elise from something, whether it’s an activity or a piece of information, will really get under her skin.
FEARS
Partly, she fears her power. While she won’t admit it, she is still slightly afraid of what she can do. She has accepted that she has the powers, though she doesn’t appreciate the way she looks when she uses it. She fears that her power will gross people out and drive them away from her. She also fears her powers will quit on her while she’s ‘boned up’, making her spend the rest of her life with bones sticking out of her body in odd places.
Losing the people she loves. Elise’s family has never been quite complete, since she grew up without a father. Sure, she visited her father and brother from time to time, though that’s not the same. It was hard for her at times, therefore she never wants to lose anyone else she cares about. She knows that a life as a hero, or sidekick will bring dangers along though, which makes it all the more horrible when she thinks of it that some people she loves might go into battle and never return. Because they do so by choice.
QUIRKS
Her last name. Elise and Lars share a father, though since Elise lived with and was raised by her mother, she has her mother’s last name.
Multilingual. Dutch is Elise’s mother tongue, though from when she was young, she was also taught English, French and German.
Ribbons. It is a rare occurrence to see Elise without a colourful ribbon in her hair that matches her outfit.
OVERALL PERSONALITY[/b]
Cheerful. In Elise’s language there is a saying she likes a lot. ‘Een dag niet gelachen is een dag niet geleefd.’ Which basically translates to ‘A day without laughter is a day not lived.’ She lives by this saying and therefore wakes up with a smile and goes to bed with a smile. She doesn’t like to take any negative energy she was exposed to during the day with her when she goes to sleep, so she simply chooses not to.
Kind. Kindness is an important thing for Elise. She doesn’t like violence or prejudice and always tries to give the people she means a fair chance. Even if she doesn’t know you in the least, you can count on getting a smile from this girl when you pass her in the streets. She believes that if you are kind to others, that kindness will find a way back to you.
Sophisticated. Elise is a lady and expects to be treated that way. She won’t stand for rudeness and isn’t afraid to point it out if someone is being rude. She may be a strong, independent woman, that doesn’t mean she doesn’t expect the person walking in front of her to hold the door if she’s coming up just behind.
Or not. While she likes to act like a mature lady most of the time, she can do very unladylike things. She has no problems with getting a little dirty when the situation calls for it, and occasionally likes making rather immature jokes.
Practical. Elise does like to complain when things don’t go her way, though she is practical in a way that she works around the obstacles and makes things turn around for her again. If the situation allows her to, she might also make the obstacle work to her advantage.
Passionate. Elise’s passion boils very close to the surface, and she will never hide it. She tries her best at everything she does, and a little extra at the things she likes doing. She isn’t one to be ashamed of the things she does. Some things in which her passion clearly shows is her cooking and the saxophone.
Devoted. Devotion to her friends and family is a given for Elise. There’s no question about it. If they need her, she will do her very best to be there for them and help them to the best of her abilities. She is caring and has a natural mother instinct. Especially if someone is younger than her, she feels the need to take care of them and make sure they are safe and sound.
Hotheaded. Despite her kind nature, Elise can have a bit of a short fuse. If you insult her, prepare for the consequences. She won’t likely strike out, since she doesn’t like violence, though do expect her to tell you exactly what you were doing wrong, in detail and often very colourful language.
Nosy and talkative. Elise is a very curious girl and likes to know the whos and whats of everything people are talking about. She loves to talk and is prone to gossip. Secrets aren’t safe from her. If she wants to know something, chances are that she will find out.
Flirt. As mentioned before, Elise is a very kind person. Sometimes she likes being a bit more than just friendly though. She enjoys a good flirt, even if it doesn’t lead anywhere. Sometimes she doesn’t even notice she’s doing it and believes she’s just being friendly. At other times she just can’t help herself.
A tad messy. When entering her room, it won’t look like a battlefield, though she doesn’t keep a perfectly clean room. She’s prone to letting her things lie around and not putting thing back where she picked them up. She likes it that way though. It makes a room feel more lived in, homey, cosy even.[/ul]
`WHEN HES INSIDE YOU KNOW THERES NO ROOM FOR ME!
[/font](( From Monstalia, where Elise was an Angel. This was during an event where due to some unknown powers everyone woke up in bed next to another character, in a house that looked like they had been married for years. Belgium was coupled to Norway, a kelpie. ))
The Angel had been warming up to Erik for the slightest bit, though he managed to get her uptight again with a single, seemingly innocent, question. Elise froze for a moment when she heard Erik ask about her brother. This guy knew Willem? She couldn’t help but wonder how, and what his relationship was with this creature. Though… her brother was a fallen angel. He probably didn’t have a problem in hanging around with other dark creatures.
“I… know him.” She said, not confirming or denying the question. A bit of scorn was audible in her voice, even though she tried to keep her voice neutral. She hadn’t thought about her brother for a while. In the beginning she had thought about it all the time, not knowing how to feel about it. Disappointment, worry, sadness, anger. It all mixed in some strange emotion that she didn’t know. Though slowly she had learned to live with it. She hadn’t seen her brother anymore since. But seeing as this guy apparently knew him, he could be near. Maybe she could… No. Elise shook the thoughts off. She couldn’t go look for him. It was better if she just never saw him again, no matter how much she wanted to see him again. It would only hurt more.
She nodded absentmindly as Erik asked if she could teach him something new. She wasn’t so much looking at the pictures on the wall, as she was studying the man’s behaviour. The way he caressed one of those pictures, almost as if he remembered the time it was taken, and longed for that time to come back.
She followed Erik to the kitchen and took a look around. It was strange, but it was almost as if she had been there to decide what the kitchen would look like. The furniture, the way everything stood… well, if this really was their home, that wouldn’t be so strange. And since Elise loved to cook, she would’ve had a say in how the kitchen was going to be, no matter what. She looked at the cupboards, making a list in her head of where she would put things if she this was her kitchen. Where would the coffee be? She opened up a cupboard, and a small, satisfied smile crept onto her face as she spotted the coffee. Yes, she obviously had a hand in this kitchen. “Found it.” She let the other know. “If you make some coffee, I’ll take care of the rest.”
She moved through the kitchen as if she had known the place for years. It wasn’t long before Elise had found bread, some eggs, and some other things she needed. “Do you like French toast?” She asked while breaking the eggs into a bowl and working at them with a whisk. Her wrist made fast, smooth movements while she focussed her attention on her work. Her thoughts started to drift back to what Erik had asked before, and she couldn’t help but ask.
“… How is he?” She asked, still facing the eggs in the bowl. “Willem, I mean.” Elise was probably better off not knowing, but her curiosity got the better of her. She hadn’t heard of her brother for so long, and this might be the only chance she had to find out how he was doing.
