It had been two weeks since Ana María had put up the lacrosse team posters all over the school. She had been excited to get her team together once more. After the former captain had graduated two years ago, the title had been passed down to her and she had managed to take her team to victory. It had been quite an accomplishment, especially since Ana María had never really played lacrosse before until she had come to Asher. It was a sport that wasn't really played in Mexico. People had rarely heard about it, but it seemed fun to her. After all she got to beat people up with giant sticks and not get in trouble, what could possibly not be fun about that?
Ana María was dressed in her team uniform that bore the number sixteen on the back. It was her lucky number. She had reserved the space in between the tracks for the whole evening. The field also served to help train the soccer and the football team, but considering she was part of the soccer team as well, she had managed to get Antonio to let go of it for the time being.
She could hardly contain her joy. Ana María was really proud of her team and she wore the gold and blue school colors with the same posture as she would when holding the Mexican flag. Here was a secret that nobody really knew. Asher was more like home to Ana María than her home in Mexico City. She felt more at peace here without all the burdens of family life that didn't seem to fulfill her needs. It was almost like home was somewhere between both lands, with her friends and the teachers, and the nights sneaking into the forest and the team that felt like family.
It was precisely that that she wanted her teammates to feel, like the team mattered in a way that much else didn't seem to. As Ana María took a deep breath she waited for potential pledges to meet her. Perhaps her most brilliant idea had been to make the team co-ed. Of course she would never put guys to hit girls or the other way around, but it seemed that combining both aspects made the team that much stronger. Besides, that way she could recruit more people and have more fun and that's what sports were really about, right?
