RODERICH EDELSTEIN
`WELCOME TO YOUR LIFE, THERE'S NO TURNING BACK!
NICKNAMES He doesn't recognize any such nicknames (but Roddy and Specs and many others have been used)
AGE 22
GENDER Male
ETHNICITY Austrian
TEACHER OR STUDENT Teacher
AREA Music
SPECIAL ABILITY(s)
Sound Wave Manipulation: Roderich can manipulate sound waves with varying effects. He can amplify sound waves to deafening levels. Since he's gotten a good grasp on his powers he can even increase sound waves to window-breaking, even structure-breaking levels. The downside is that he doesn't have a whole lot of finesse at those levels so its an all or nothing kind of thing in a wave around him. On the opposite end he can reduce sound waves to practically nothing, effectively muting whatever sound he is controlling. This means that he can effectively mute people, which is very useful for dealing with his students. That being said he can only focus on one thing a time, either on a person or object or on a larger area. There are other things he could do with this power, but he never had any formal studies in his powers nor any desire to become a superhero.
Hearing: As a side result of his powers he has much better hearing than a human. This is an active power, not a passive power however. He doesn't have to really focus to use it, it's like a second nature nowadays, but he can't use manipulate other sound waves then so if he's muting someone he hears just as well as the average person. The other downside is that everything only gets louder or softer so it is only effective in an already quiet place for listening to other people. He can't focus this ability to listen to a specific conversation.
HOW DID THEY FIGURE OUT?
Roderich was quiet as a child. He didn't make have many friends and din't have any siblings, but at the same time he didn't have much of a desire for friends. The world was always so loud and noisy and kids were always so loud and noisy. He much preferred the company of his books and musical instruments.
When he was still in primary school he was in music class one day when suddenly the sounds of the classroom grew exponentially louder, ringing in his ears and making him cry out. He kept yelling as his classmates stopped their playing and stared at him. Yet he could hear everything going on in other classrooms and even outside and everything was so loud he couldn't stand it until suddenly there was silence. Roderich blinked and looked around him at the other students as they stared back. One of his classmates opened her mouth to say something, but nothing came out. Not even the teacher could say anything, it was deathly silent. And then just like that all the sound came back like a burst bubble, children's screams filling the air. After that Roderich ran out of the classroom and never came back. His parents found out about what happened. They also learned that his school didn't want him to return so they moved and he transferred to a new school.
Years later after finishing secondary school he entered an American university on a music scholarship and earned a degree in music with a minor in education, earning his teaching license at the same time. He tried out for several very prestigious orchestras, but when he didn't get any offers he was distraught, very unused to the harsh realities of life and rejection. He was panicking as he was getting close to graduating from college when he heard about the school for people with "special abilities". After looking into it he applied and that's how he ended up at the school.[/ul]
`EVEN WHILE WE SLEEP. WE WILL FIND YOU,
- Music: Of course, music is much of Roderich's life. Even with his powers he'd much prefer to become a musician by profession, but one cannot just be a full time orchestral musician unless one is famous so he
- Baking: When he has time Roderich enjoys baking and is actually very good at it. He has a sweet tooth so his specialties are pastries and sweet desserts, but he is also good at baking bread
- Fine art: A love of the arts, he makes regular trips to the local art museum and is a frequent attendee of the school's art shows.
- Coupons: Though he likes quality, he also likes to save money whenever possible and as such he will collect coupons and use those whenever possible to buy the things he needs.
- Coffee: Roderich drinks a lot of coffee. He isn't truly awake until he's had his coffee in the morning. He's also a total coffee snob and looks down at any and all instant 'coffees'.
- Quiet gatherings: Despite some of his anti-social tendencies, Roderich does like talking with people he cares about (as long as it's not too loud).
CHARACTER NAME DISLIKES
- 'Coarse' music: He's really not a fan of 'rock' or 'rap' or any of this super loud music.
- Waste: Though Roderich came from a upper-middle class family they were actually very frugal and as result he picked it up as well.
- Loud noise: Though his hearing isn't as sensitive as when he was a child, he still detests loud places.
- Big cities: They are way too fast-paced for his liking. To that end, that is one of the positives of Hawaii, though he could do without all the tourists.
- Spicy food: He really can't handle it at all. He'll turn red in the face and his nose runs like a faucet eating anything more than very mildly spicy.
- Being teased: He's a serious person and gets flustered rather easily so he doesn't like it at all.
- The Outdoors: He is absolutely a 'city boy'. He has zero interest in camping or hiking and much prefers the comforts of the city.
FEARS
- The Ocean: One time when his family was on vacation they went to the beach and he was swimming out in the ocean when he got stung by jellyfish and his parents had to take him to the hospital. Needless to say he wasn't a huge fan of the ocean after that.
- Losing Control: He knows he has good control over his powers, but he fears what would happen if he did lose control and who he would hurt.
- Losing his Dream: His dream is to join an orchestra, but it is very competitive and even joining one would not pay all his bills. So for now he is gaining teaching experience/saving up money to later pursue his dream of playing the piano in an orchestra.
QUIRKS
-Roderich has a terrible habit of getting lost. He is far from stupid, but when it comes to remembering locations or layouts of even the school. As a side result this means that he also has a bad habit of being chronically late, much to his own chagrin.
-He tends to walk at a very amiable pace.
-He doesn't need to wear glasses, but he likes the look and thinks they add character to his face.
OVERALL PERSONALITY
Roderich is a man who appreciates cleanliness and order, but is not a devout follower of either. His living and work spaces are always clean, but not spotless as he's definitely not a neat-freak. He also isn't very orderly. He doesn't make big messes, but he does make small messes especially with his desk and other areas with flat space. Though he's a little messy his messiness is usually in such a way that he knows where everything is. To that end he hates when someone tries to tidy up his spaces as then he can't find anything.
He is a perfectionist when it comes to his work, though his hobbies have the top priority. So while he does his best for all parts of his life, he puts much more time into music and baking and the things he truly enjoys. In fact, when possible he's happy to let others do work he doesn't want to do. He'll be sure to thank them gracefully, but in the end he can even be called a little lazy. So while he is good at paperwork and will put his all into his music and teaching, any kind of physical activity he will happily pass on to someone else.
Because he's a perfectionist though he doesn't take failure very well when it comes to things he cares about. He remains composed under pressure, but when he does fail miserably his composure cracks. He isolates himself as he hates to show that much emotion in front of others. His parents loved him, but they were not very expressive in 'I love you's or hugs and Roderich when in school was always more withdrawn so he still doesn't totally know how to deal with emotions. He'll be sympathetic to others' pain, but he's a little awkward and hates to show his own vulnerability, especially as he wears his heart on his sleeve. He likes to always keep himself composed, but when he is upset he shows it.
In fact, Roderich gets flustered rather easily as he is very easy to tease. He might seem a serious person, and he is, but he's not all that snobby, unless provoked. He's polite and proper, but can at times be almost lackadaisical in behavior. He lives life at a rather slow pace actually. He likes to take his time and enjoy the finer things of life at his own pace. Because he's a perfectionist, he will take exactly as long as it needs for him to get it done exactly as he wants. He is responsible so he'll meet his deadlines, but for everything else he takes it easy.
One thing that one would not expect at first glance is his passion. He lives for music. He feels the most alive when he is playing or listening to classical music. This passion translates well to his teaching. Roderich can be strict, but he is fair and is happy to help, so long as the student asks. One thing he is still working on is patience though, as he has very little patience for students who do not even try. This impatience extends to his dealings with other people in general. He has no tolerance for brash or rude or annoying people and when he doesn't like someone he is all too happy to share it.
While Roderich isn't very outwardly affectionate he shows his caring through his actions. He'll bake things or give small gifts that remind him of the person. He's a good listener and remembers the small things about the people he cares about. Finally, he's not very adventurous. He has no wish to be a superhero or anything overly bold. His perfect day is much calmer. Good food, music, sightseeing, and good company is all he needs.
`ACTING ON YOUR BEST BEHAVIOR, TURN YOUR BACK ON MOTHER NATURE!
[/ul][/font]Roderich straightened his back and took a deep breath. Nerves shook his body, but with another inhale and exhale he was ready. His fingers glided to the keys and without any further ado he began playing Brahm's Rhapsody in B Minor Op. 79 No. 1. Certainly not the most complicated piece, but full of emotion that he put all of his heart into bringing out.
His fingers danced across the keys of grand piano with music filling the hall, loud in moments of exuberance and soft in the moments of contemplation. Lost in the moment Roderich forgot about his nerves and just who his audience was. The notes of the piano filled him with joy like the interior of a grand cathedral. That tranquility was shattered though when he hit a wrong key, the note reverberating in his mind, but he kept going with little outward indications of his mistake except for a minute frown.
When the piece was finished with final stroke of his finger, he opened his eyes and took a second to remember where he was. It only took a moment for him to regain his bearings and he collected his music and stood up, bowing to the panel of judges before walking off the stage. His nerves were creeping back as he walked back, but he still felt calm from the music. He truly hoped they would offer him a position with the orchestra. Until he'd learn the results though, he'd just keep his cell phone safe in his pocket, always within reach for that moment when it would ring.
As he made it outside he greeted his friend who had gone to the trouble to drive him to the try-outs with a curt nod, though his body posture betrayed his tension. His friend, well aware of his habits after having known him for three years, asked him, "So how did it go?" Roderich hesitated before answering. "It... I made a single keystroke error. It was a slip of the finger, but..." His eyebrows furrowed while his friend looked on worriedly. She asked, "It was just one mistake though, right? They might not have even noticed it."
Roderich shook his head, growing more uneasy. "You don't understand. This is the Chicago orchestra there is no room for mistakes!" He stopped himself, frowning and turning to look at her, continuing, "I'm sorry, I'm frustrated with myself, not you."
She just smiled easily and pat his shoulder. "Try not to worry about it too much. You're amazing, they'd be crazy not to pick you. And even if they don't, you've tried out for other orchestras as well right? You'll get into one of them I'm sure of it."
