SPECIAL ABILITY(s)
Teleportation || João’s main power is teleportation, that is, being able to instantaneously travel from one place to another. All items or objects he’s in contact with will be transferred as well, provided they’re small and light enough for it. He can, for example, take with him a bag or even a bicycle, but a tree or something that’s part of a bigger structure (for example, a window), will not be going anywhere. In addition, he also has a cooldown to using his power again, which ranges from a few seconds to minutes to hours, depending on the distance and amount of objects he teleported. He can bring with himself one other person who he’s touching at the time of transfer. If he’s touching more than one person, the one he’s physically closest to will be the one transferred. He can mainly teleport to places he has seen or can accurately imagine in his mind (such as a place he has seen a recent photo of), and although possible, he rarely teleports to unknown places. That’s because teleporting at random is very much a shot in the dark; he might end up anywhere.
Sometimes his power activates involuntarily, such as in response to his other power (i.e, someone flings a punch at him, and his reflexes activate, prompting him to teleport a few inches away from the impact). While this is useful in that it makes him a difficult target, it can also have negative effects. For example, sometimes his power activates when he sneezes or stumbles, and during those times it’s not guaranteed where he’ll end up. He’s known to have visited half the countries out there by accident at one point. The positive side is, he always brings souvenirs!
Inhuman reflexes || João’s other power, which works together with his teleportation both in good and bad. He has reflexes that surpass those of a regular human, meaning that his reaction speed is far faster than usual and he's therefore almost impossible to hit. This allows him to dodge things as well as make sudden turns and the like, of course within the limits of what his body can actually do. This also sometimes allows his teleportation power to activate without him willing to, though more often than not, the results aren’t that good; many a time he has tripped, reacted just before he’d hit the pavement by teleporting, and end up almost drowning in an ocean instead of just falling and getting a small scratch.
HOW DID THEY FIGURE OUT?
Teleportation || It was a perfectly normal day. João was in middle school, playing soccer like usual, high up on adrenaline and determined to win. He was still yards away from the goal, but he had his sights set on it as he ran with the ball. There were people closing in on him from all sides, and pressure started to build up in his tiny little head. He stared at the goal, pulled his leg back to kick… and all of a sudden, disappeared from his previous spot, only to reappear inside the goal, his face inches away from the goal net – which he ended up kicking instead of the ball, getting so tangled up it took four men to pry him free. He insisted it be counted as a goal if not for anything else but the fact that it had been one of the coolest things he had ever done in his life. Well, right up until he was told to pay for the damage he did to the net…
It took him a couple more years and various “how did I end up here?” incidents before he actually learned to control his power enough to be allowed to use it at all. Before it though, he had already traumatized a few innocent passersby by teleporting into a crowded street straight from his shower (and walking home naked because eh, he didn’t want to buy new clothes and get them wet), stolen from a shop on an accident by picking up food and dreaming about eating it on his couch where he’d end up moments later, and so on and so forth. Nowadays he’s mostly in control of it, but accidental and mis-aimed teleportations still occur, especially when he doesn’t know the destination’s layout well.
Inhuman reflexes || João’s reflex-power is something he has always had, at least to an extent. It started out as him having better than average reaction speeds and eventually evolved to him being able to dodge things from point blank with little to no difficulty. He actually only realized it was a power after he had already learned about his teleportation ability, and it’s actually because of it that he was sent to the academy in the first place. While his teleportation power is mostly under control, his reflexes always aren’t. Sometimes he hits people on accident, dodges things thrown at him that he wouldn't want to dodge (another reason he hates baseball), and so on. He needs to constantly be on his calmest, otherwise he might risk reacting to something minor and unconsciously interpreting movement as something dangerous.
Due to this, don’t be alarmed he jumps ten meters away at the sight of a bird flying towards him. He isn’t afraid of the things, his body just firmly believes adorable little doves are harmful and must be avoided at all costs – even it means sending poor João stumbling down the stairs.
`EVEN WHILE WE SLEEP. WE WILL FIND YOU,
♥ Nature || And being surrounded by it. He especially likes forests and other places with lots of flora and exciting animals. Whenever he feels like he just has to think or meditate for whatever reason, he’ll go hike or surround himself with a thick, secluded forest. He loves animals as well, from the cute little critters to the dangerous felines he only learned not to pet through (bad) experiences.
♥ The beach / water / baths / showering || João loves water in general, and is quite a beast when swimming. He loves the beach as it offers him a chance to just loaf around and not worry about anything, and he enjoys showering and baths mostly for the same reasons; relaxation and water! Plus, cleanliness. He does like looking good, after all.
♥ Portuguese || His beloved mother tongue! Although he has always held a great appreciation for it, when he realized many didn’t even realize it existed or thought of it as nothing but a dialect of Spanish, he started to appreciate it even more. If you know the language you can bet he will like you, and more than likely spend hours discussing you in it – even in the middle of class.
♥ Music / Dance|| Probably the things he loves second best right after soccer. João enjoys music and has a passion for dance, so look out for him on the dance floor!
♥ Being close to people || João is a lover of warmth and touch, and so it would only make sense he likes to hug and sit close to people. He conveys a lot of his thoughts and emotions through touch, and feels that one brush of a person’s cheek or pat on the back says so much more than any words ever could.
♥ Fame || He doesn’t really care about getting rich or famous otherwise, but… fame when it comes to the things he loves? An absolute must. There’s nothing that strokes his ego quite like hearing compliments for his latest game, or seeing his dancing partner bragging about him to friends. Of course, he makes sure he helps in spreading out the fame, so don’t be surprised if he randomly bursts into telling about his latest achievements.
♥ Carnaval || They’re so full of life, color and culture, how could anyone not love them? People letting loose and forgetting all about the bad things in life for the time being. Sure, they get pretty loud most of the time, but what’s life living in constant silence? He loves this time most of the year, as any troubles he might have get forgotten in the preparations and the partying.
♥ Helping people || João enjoys both giving people assistance and seeing them smile, and receiving praises for doing so. He thinks that if a person is at all capable of giving aid to another, they should definitely do it. He especially likes to help women, as he considers it his duty as a man to help out the fairer and weaker sex. He doesn’t mean anything bad by it, but understandably this doesn’t always go well with many women who don’t want to be considered any weaker than the men.
♥ Relaxing / taking things slow || When he’s not partying or otherwise having fun, João loves to live life lazily. Overall he's a very calm person (when not being crazily outgoing), and doesn't like to rush or make ruckus.
♥ Family || João considers family the most important thing above all else
♥ Coffee || Whenever he actually works, he drinks this a lot to keep himself functioning. Actually, scratch that, he drinks it even when he isn’t working. It’s a habit more than anything.
DISLIKES
↓ Baseball || He just doesn’t get it. Why do you have to swing a bat to hit the ball, run to a predestined location and then just… stand still and wait when it’s not your turn? How can that get anyone’s adrenaline flowing?
↓ Crime|| And talking about it. He knows that form where he’s from there’s quite a bit of corruption and crime going on, but it’s not like that all there is to his home country. Besides, it’s gotten better in recent years. Why can’t people see that, and instead choose to only focus on the negative news?
↓ Being mistaken to speaking Spanish || João doesn’t speak Spanish. The people in his country speak Portuguese and no, although it is close to Spanish, it is not the same. Originally he had nothing against the language or learning it, but with so many people walking up to him, greeting him in the language and then being confused when he doesn’t reply back, he has started to grow a mild dislike for the entire language without meaning to. As such, he refuses to learn it; God forbid he’d actually endorse the mistake by doing that.
↓ Losing in Soccer || Any other loss he can take with a smiling face and a wave of his hand, but when it comes to futebol, he refuses to lose to anyone, ever. It’s his pride and joy, and he wants to retain his reputation as an amazing player.
↓ Bad stereotypes || And for some reason, he thinks bad stereotypes are all foreigners have of people coming from his home country; even if people actually have quite a few good stereotypes associated with his people as well, and actually love his country! Thinking others think badly of him is actually one of the few occasions when he isn’t thinking positively. It’s pretty strange, really.
↓ People being distant/cold || João likes being close to people, both figuratively and physically as mentioned, and as such he thinks it a pity when some people don’t warm up to him no matter what. He won’t get mad at such people, but he will sulk for a moment before coming up with a plan to change your mind and make you enjoy his shows of affection.
↓ Selfish people || He just doesn’t get them. If you can help someone else without losing anything of your own, why wouldn’t you? Although not exactly a heroic figure, João will poke his noses into other people’s businesses if he thinks someone is being unnecessarily vile.
↓ Conflict || Especially if it’s inner conflict. He has always had some trouble with conflicting ideals, traits and thoughts, and really hates trying to make sense out of a chaos of clashing sides. He also really, really hates breaking up others’ fights, and often ends up trying to change the subject instead. He will also avoid any fights others might start with him, and most often succeed; it’s tough to be mad at him when he’s confused you with his ramblings to the point you don’t even remember why you were mad in the first place.
↓ Being rushed || “I’ll do it later”, is one of this guy’s most used phrases, especially when applied to work or school stuff. He likes to do things on his own pace, and doesn’t understand why he should rush. If he can get things done in time anyway, why not let him take a few naps and attend a few parties first? Rushing never goes over well with him, and actually makes him even more reluctant to get started.
FEARS
# Hospital || João hates going to the hospital, to the point he sometimes cares for his own wounds and sicknesses to avoid having to go. He will often downplay his injuries for this purpose as well, and trying to convince him to go is not an easy task. This is because he’s had some unfortunate experiences with hospitals before in the past.
# Losing identity || João’s past is marked with multiple cases of inner turmoil and conflict, and sometimes he feels like his opinions and feelings are torn to multiple different directions. He hates the feeling, and always has a hard time bringing himself back from amidst the chaos.
QUIRKS
!! His Curl || He has named it Rio Grande do Sul, after the region of Brazil that wants to separate from the mainland. Sometimes, it almost seems like the curl has a mind of its own; whenever João makes a decision the curl ‘doesn’t like’, it starts tugging away from his head, and some say they have even witnessed it being sentient enough to poke its owner when he oversleeps. Whether this is true or just João fooling around and playing pretend though, nobody knows.
!! Thumb sucking || João has the strange habit of sucking his thumb whenever he feels left out or lonely. Whether this is something that genuinely helps him or just a means to get people to pay attention to him nobody knows. Sometimes it feels like even he doesn’t know. It’s a habit he might not even be aware of. Wouldn’t be the first.
!! Constant showering || Usually people are asked how many times a week they shower. Well, with João, that could almost be changed to how many times a day. He loves his showering like nothing else, and there is absolutely no way you will be getting him to come out in less than forty-five minutes. He says he loves water in general, and especially loves to clean himself after a sweaty practice session. He says it makes him feel like accomplished something during his training.
!! Smiling with his eyes closed || A rather peculiar habit of his, João often tends to keep his eyes closed when he smiles (or just talks in general). Sometimes he even does this when walking. It’s an eternal mystery how he doesn’t hit every post he comes across.
OVERALL PERSONALITY
If you were given only a handful of words to describe this Brazilian, “positive”, “calm” and "eccentric" would no doubt be among your first picks. Be it for better or worse, he's quirky and a lot of the time it seems as if he's living in a world of his own, unconcerned by most troubles he faces. He's always doing his best to be positive, has for so many years that it's almost second nature to find somethings good in everyone and everything now. Oh, his bicycle broke down right under him in pouring rain and he missed his bus because of it? It's okay, that just means he got himself a good opportunity to get some exercise in! And really, that particular example is not merely hypothetical; a bit of a bad luck magnet at times, João's stuff seems to break down and malfunction alarmingly often. Not that he minds.
Indeed, smiles are commonplace for him, and getting him visibly concerned even in face of hardships is not exactly an easy feat. Even in the rare occasions that he does truly get bothered, he's quick to push the issue aside and pretend it didn't happen. Spreading negativity to your peers is a no go, and he doesn't want to be looked at as someone in need of help or concern. If that happened, he might start to view himself in a similar light - and he fears what might happen if he opened the can of worms known as worry. What if he were able to close it again? Seriously, no thank you, he'd rather enjoy his life instead. Sure, this might mean that he can come across as childish and irresponsible, but he doesn’t really mind. The important thing is, he had fun.
As said, João is incredibly calm, to the point he sometimes looks almost sleepy. His steps are not rushed and he takes his time with everything he can. He isn't a fan of being rushed, and highly dislikes time limits of any kind. Of course, this aura of serenity is completely turned upside down whenever he gets truly invested or interested in something; he's a bag of passion wrapped under sheets of serenity, and the second you free what's inside, man, you better be prepared for something crazy! Passionate and a lover of fun, give him a chance to party, a good reason to be active and he'll take it - just watch him when he truly gets into a soccer match.
Should you ask for others’ opinion on the Brazilian, you’d very often hear the word “lazy” pop up. And really, just one glance in his general direction is likely to reveal you exactly why; if he isn't having fun elsewhere, you will indeed often find the guy napping, loafing around or even flirting or socializing when he’s on the clock. It might be the day before the deadline for a very important project, or it might be a week away from the finals, and yet he most likely hasn’t shown any indication of even being about to pick up a book or a pen to do stuff. And yet, once the deadline and the exams are over, you’ll find, much to your surprise, that he got everything done and passed everything he needed to. He might not have done it with flying colors, but he did. “How?” you might ask, and he would just shrug and tell you “The same way everyone else did. I worked for it~!” See, the thing is, he does work on occasion - it’s just very rare for anyone to see it. Whenever he actually works he prefers doing it alone and secluded, not wanting to make a big deal out of his efforts (well, that’s what he says anyway, the real reason is he knows he can’t concentrate when there are huggable people around him. Damn cuddling urges). He might not seem like it, but underneath he’s a very dependable guy if you just give him a chance and a reason to prove it. That is to say, don't trust him with your school work, but do call him if you need help with something actually important to you, like moving. Just… don’t work with him if you want things done right away. The only thing he believes should come right away is food.
Of course, meeting deadlines doesn’t mean he wouldn’t be late from every single actual meeting possible. Not a single day of his many years of school has gone by without him having to apologize for tardiness, and he isn’t displaying any will to change now. He doesn’t understand why people need to arrive to places ten minutes earlier, it’s not like anything important will ever be going on in the first thirty minutes, right? He might as well rest home during that time to make sure he has enough energy to pay attention once the important stuff comes up. He’s just being thoughtful and strategic!
Although not that wealthy or particularly strong himself, João is very generous, and oftentimes helps people even if it causes trouble for him later on. It might just be because he doesn’t much think of the consequences of his actions, but he’s known to, for example, give his lunch money to someone else because they were hungry, and only realize he needed it himself once he reaches the cafeteria and can’t pay for his share. Sometimes he goes to help when people are being bullied too, only to end up getting his ass kicked as well because… well, he didn’t say he could fight, did he? Even so, despite all the setbacks, he won’t stop helping people. He says seeing smiling faces is enough of a reward for him to keep continuing.
To João, family is the most important thing of all. This doesn’t only mean blood-related family either, as he tends to refer to close friends and the like as his brothers and sisters. Be careful though; once he considers you family, it’s very, very difficult to get rid of him. He will come visit you every single day (or night) at random hours – whether you like it or not. And don’t bother trying to lock your door from him; he’s very much used to climbing in through windows, and actually possesses some skill in lock-picking (and when that doesn’t work? He can teleport right on your lap or next to you on your bed). He doesn’t much like to talk about it, but there has been some criminal activity involved in his past, which partly explains some of his more shadier skills, such as the aforementioned lock-picking. Another skill of his is that he has this incredible knack for getting around most rules laid to restrict his actions. Though not a rule breaker perse, he will stretch and bend any rule he considers to be in his way to his will, slipping past them gracefully enough to avoid detection - sometimes. Going undetected was never one of his fortes.
João loves to look good. He really likes picking out clothes and dressing for the occasion, although it’s not impossible to see him go without a shirt in hot weather either. Oftentimes, he likes to add a few accessories to his school uniform as well. Nothing that would make him look like he’s breaking the dress code, just something small to make the look his own. That is, unless he’s being lazy. He is also known for sometimes completely disregarding the dress code and coming to school shirtless or in swimwear when it's more convenient for him than changing.
One more thing worth a mention is that João is, to an extent, pretty open to influence. While his overall personality can’t be altered that easily, he has the tendency to pick up both cultural and behavioral habits from the people around him. Sometimes he does this almost unconsciously, while sometimes he goes and mimics people’s extension for fun. He loves to learn about different cultures, and equally enjoys sharing his own.
Even though he doesn’t do it constantly, João enjoys flirting and teasing people from time to time. He rarely goes past anything minor, and even more rarely does he actively pursue anyone for a relationship or even go so far as to start touching people in anything but a purely platonic manner. He’s very open about his likes and dislikes and believes people should be allowed to be what they are as well, and so the men aren’t safe from his flirting attempts either. He’s very religious however, and although he’s a bit more laidback in his faith, he will often remove his cross-earring if he goes any further with a guy out of respect for the symbol. He also prays at times, and is known to confess his sins from time to time – sometimes in the middle of the street or some other equally strange place upon suddenly remembering he’s yet to do so today.
Still, even João isn’t without his bad sides – in addition to often causing stress to others with his carefree ways, that is. For one, he plays favorites. While he considers most people his friends, he will favor those he has things in common with (especially if the ‘thing’ is either Portuguese or soccer), as well as those he has known longer. And while it’s all fine and normal to feel closer to some friends than others, the trouble is that João doesn’t think to hide it. He isn’t rude on purpose, he’s just very direct. If he wants someone else to sit next to him instead of you, he will call the person over and tell you that your place has just been seized by someone else. He’s also one to speak his mind, and rarely holds back his opinions or thoughts, even if it means interrupting someone else’s speech.
He’s both rather informal and touchy-feely as well, not thinking anything of holding hands or hugging people he barely knows. He will get confused if you don’t like that as well, and most likely needs to be told not to get so close multiple times before he understands he’s making you uncomfortable and needs to back off. And even then, you can be sure he’s doing the same thing again tomorrow, thinking that maybe by then you’d have warmed up to him enough not to mind.
Many might not realize it at first, but João is very competitive when it comes to a certain aforementioned sport. He isn’t that sore a loser in general (although he will pretend to be a lot more careless about the loss than he really is), but when it comes to soccer, he’s so passionate it can sometimes be scary. Even though his smile never leaves his face, he shows no mercy on the field, and his eyes are filled with determination not present in any other activity he takes part in, ever. He gets especially bad if the match is against an Argentinean team, and will not take losing well. Although he would never admit it, he considers the country’s players his worst rivals, and every time he loses, it really, really stings. He does his best to hide it and appear like he doesn’t care, but anyone who knows him well enough can probably see the crack in his smile and the fiery look in his eyes that refuses to leave before he has had his revenge in the next game. He gets equally passionate even when he’s just watching the games, as well, and after every important game, his room is often a complete mess. That, and every single round-ish object within sight has probably been used as a soccer ball at least once during the match when he wanted to ‘show the players how to kick properly.’ After the most heated part of the season is over and things calm down however, he returns to his usual self.
Overall, while João might seem like a guy who rarely thinks deep and just goes along with the ride to have fun, that’s not exactly true either. Yes, fun is a major motivator to him, and many of his actions are marked with a distinctive lack of pre-planning, that doesn’t mean he wouldn’t have a deeper side to him as well, and as surprising as it might sound he is capable of worrying; he just doesn’t want to be. He doesn’t like to worry or deal with problems, and would rather claim they don’t exist or go around them than deal with them head on. He doesn’t much like conflict, neither with others nor with himself (especially not with himself) and tries to avoid that by not really minding anything. Most of the occasions when he has felt torn inside and conflicted with his own thoughts and emotions have been sparked by starting to over-think or worry about things instead of just doing what he feels like at the moment, and so his carefree lifestyle is a way to combat that.
Also, although he often surrounds himself with a lot of friends, socializes a lot and seems to often speak his mind, many of his friends realize at some point in time that despite being close to him, they know next to nothing about him. And if you ever mention this to him, he’ll just shrug, laugh, and liken himself to the forests of Amazon; if people knew everything there was to know, they wouldn’t be quite as fascinated, now would they? It’s the mystery that keeps them coming back for more, after all~
`ACTING ON YOUR BEST BEHAVIOR, TURN YOUR BACK ON MOTHER NATURE!
[/ul][/font]A certain Brazilian was leaning against the outer wall of the school’s gym, hands in his pockets and gaze wandering lazily without really focusing on anything it happened across. Everything around him João'd already seen a dozen times, and he was in desperate need of something to do. He was quite visibly bored, needing to rock back and forth and hum to himself as if to trick himself into thinking he was doing at least something. The sand around his feet was ridden with scribbles of various kinds he’d made during his fifty-minute wait, and a couple of empty water bottles lay next to his feet, their contents having long ago been emptied on either the boy’s head or his throat in an attempt to keep himself pumped for the exercise to come.
He had suggested Afonso - a kid from Portugal who seemed to share lot of his interests and likes - that they’d meet by the gym today, for some light workout before they’d hit the waves on the beach. It had been a while since he’d worked out, and although he highly disliked hard work, he didn’t mind practise all that much. He did need to be fit to look good and to be able to withstand the waves, after all, so it wasn’t like a minute of it went to waste. That, and exercising was actually fun, especially now that he had a partner.
Or, well, would have had, if the guy had shown. Full of unused energy, João pushed himself away from the wall, paced back and forth for a while like he’d done at least a dozen times that day by now, and then flicked open his cell once more to check the time. It was almost an hour past now. Hour thrown to waste.
“Eita! I knew arriving early on would only make me wait,” the boy sighed, rustling his hair and pocketing the device once more. Really, this was the first time in months he was actually on time somewhere, and this is what happened. This was exactly why he preferred to arrive fashionably late at all times; he never had to wait. Everything fun had always just started when he came. Maybe he should call Afonso and ask what was up? Come to think of it, shouldn’t that have been what he’d ought to have done about fifty minutes ago? He figured yes, but that’d be so much work...
Just then, as if on command, the right pocket of João's shorts started to vibrate, and the teen instantly rushed to stick his hand back in and fish for the cell for what was hopefully the last time that day. He pulled it out and instantly answered, eyes shining with newfound hope.
“Alô?”
"Ei, moço. Where are you, exactly?"
Afonso was quick and to the point. Unfortunately João couldn’t manage to be either.
“Puxa! I should ask that from you, meu amigo!” He exclaimed, surprised but not really frustrated or impatient - neither was too commonplace an emotion for him anyway. “Tudo jóia? I’ve been waiting for you at the gym for over an hour. Did you forget? Aaa, it’s okay if you did, but mano, you need to inform me next time! I already used up most my water too, I think we need to buy some more before practise. Aí, anyway, so where are you?”
As João waited for an answer, he started to ponder whether or not he ever actually mentioned anything about morning practise to the other, or if that was just something he made up on his own when he woke that morning?
Well, he sure hoped it was the former. He only had one water bottle too.
