The wildlife that lived on the island where the school was built were friendly and fascinating. Kylie had never seen most of them before and only recognised what they were because of her zoology books and the wildlife documentaries that her mum recorded for her. However, like all the animals of Kylie’s acquaintance they were easily understandable, some of the accents took a bit of getting used too but that was normal for her when getting to know a new species.
The wildlife in question had rarely met a human who could understand them and were making their way to the beach in droves to where the girl was sitting on the sand. Some were a little shy and stayed further back content to merely watch and listen, other were more curious and eager to tell Kylie about themselves and answer her many questions.
“Oh yeah I like swimming too” Kylie was currently talking to the seal “but I can’t swim deep like you because it makes my ears hurt and my tail (seals didn't have a word for legs) isn't strong enough. Yeah it sucks, I wish I could go and meet the fish down there. So how often do you need to come up to breathe?”
Kylie herself could talk with animals very well, but she found it hard to explain to others exactly how she talked with them. It was a bit similar and a bit different to talking with another human, that much she could say. But when she was asked “Is it like Chinese? Is it like sign language? Is it like pig Latin? She could only shake her head no. There simply wasn't any equivalent that she could use to help others understand intellectually the way she did innately.
