So there was no real reason for her to be here, other than that the pool had calm waters and lanes marked out. She could have just as easily gone swimming at the beach, and maybe gotten to lie out in the sand as a tiger for a bit before she had to seek cover and change back into a girl. However, the beach would likely be crowded at this time, and Mei had watched the pools very carefully. Almost no one used them – and only the swim team really did. Today, at this time, the pools should be empty.
It was good for her to practice her different strokes, she thought, as she slipped into the gym, and from there, the locker room. She’d have to change, but that was no problem – there were no other girls in the changing rooms, so she didn’t have to worry. From there, she wrapped her big, fluffy pink towel around herself to hide as much of her exposed skin as she could – in the water was one thing, but out in the gym was another. She should be proper for as long as she could.
Her bare feet made little to no noise as she wandered through to reach the pool; once there, she breathed in the familiar smell of the chlorine and smiled. This was nice… the whole pool to herself. She could sing if she wanted (though she would never) and no one could be upset. Gently, she folded her towel and placed it to the side where she could easily reach it, then stepped to the edge of the pool. Her suit would be a stark contrast to the swim-team’s blue and yellow… since hers was a deep red. Red was for luck, after all, and it was lucky not to drown.
She took a deep breath, then dove into the water: it was better this way. Then she’d get the shock of transitioning from air-temperature to water-temperature over and done with. As soon as she broke the surface of the water, she began to swim to the other end of the pool, first slowly to warm her muscles up, and then more rapidly to suit her own amusement. When she finally became too tired to continue, she rested her elbows on the edge and slicked her hair out of her face, though that one stubborn strand she always fought with came right back. ’That was a good start.’
