Mathias felt his eyes widen in surprise as Kiviuq leapt forward to wrap his arms around his torso.
It seemed like time stopped for a moment. For once Mathias didn’t know what to say or do. What didn’t he understand? He was pretty sure he knew what it was like to have his super powers take the better of him. Or… maybe it was something else. The
Dane swallowed thickly, eventually opting to place his hands on Kiviuq’s shoulders and rub them lightly.
He wasn’t scared. Why would he be? Wasn’t there a whole saying that said something about idiots never getting scared? Not that he thought himself an idiot or anything… it was just… Mathias brought his gaze downwards to meet the top of the other boy’s head. He wanted to feel bad for the other boy. He wanted to cry with him and ask him about his life and what could’ve happened that had possibly made him so bitter towards people. But something in the Dane’s gut told him that now was not the time to be doing so.
Mathias eventually opted for wrapping his arms tightly around the other boy’s shoulders. He had to bend over to do so, but he was happy to be able to return the affection that the other boy so desperately needed.
“Hey buddy, don’t worry! It’s okay!”
Mathias’ voice was a lot more quiet and tender than usual as he gently pat the other’s back comfortingly. He wanted to say more than that. He really did, but right now his mouth couldn’t form any words both through the thick ball that was forming in his throat and the fact that once more he could feel his heart shattering.
For a while the two stood, a comfortable yet unproductive silence falling over them as the Dane made an attempt to calm the other’s nerves via comfortable back patting. But eventually the silence came to an end as Mathias felt the need to say something more useful that “It’s okay!”
“You know… you’re luckier than you’d think Kiviuq! You want to know why?”
Mathias didn’t wait for an answer, before he tightly squeezed the other and forced a grin onto his face.
“You’re in a whole new place now! It’s different from your home, and it is a brand new start! I bet in no time at all you’re going to learn how to control your powers and you’ll look back on these moments with me as just a funny memory! About how you met this really silly forceful guy with a lot of energy who almost got crushed by a bookshelf right in front of you!”
He paused a moment to collect his breath.
“AND. And you saved his life! Why would you ever do something like that!? He is just so freaking annoying anyway! You tell yourself that you’re crazy for doing so every day, but that it was also a really good choice too because you made a super cool friend and roommate!”
Mathias was babbling again, so he brought himself to a stop and let out a content breath of air.
“And your dog likes him too.”
“You still don't understand...”

“The longer you spend around me, the more likely you are to get hurt... or worse, killed. I can't... I can't let that happen to you.. You're too nice to me...”
